September I, my family at ten ded th e Camel Pro Seri es Springfield Mile. It was racing at its very best, however, it was very disappointing to see th e lousy job of officiating done by th e AMA. I was lu cky to have a sea t on th e start/finish line (sectio n MM, row 5. seat 7); my nose sp li t the lin e. Twice during th e day th e officials obviously co u ld n o t call the wi nners o f races in th e Camel Challenge an d in an Expert heat race. Admitted ly, over th e public address system th ey sai d th ey were trying a new video system . Is a National a pl ace to be tesu nga new syste m? An yway, they finall y did declare a w inn er in th e hea t ra ce (Davey Durell e), but it took over o ne h our to come up wi th th at decisi on. Then th ey used the video system to declare th e wrong winner of the Camel Challe nge. I will swear on my grand m other 's grave th at I saw Chris Carr win th e Challenge. To th e racers, $10,000 (t he win ne r's share o f th e $17.500 posted for th e Camel Ch al len ge) can mean every thi ng, even to Chris Carr. Everybody kne w he won , including th e th ird place finishe r, Terry Poovey, who said th at he felt Carr had wo n it. . I love th e races, admire the race rs, and still ha te the AMA's officiating. They will just keep running this great form of racing into the ground until it does n't exist anymore.
