With tempera tures hovering near the 100
degree mark, Rex Sta ten piloted his Wh ite
Brorhers/Sinasalo/ Race T ech/FMF/ Varn erbacked Ho nda CR500 to a pair of mo to wi ns
in the Over The Hill Ga ng Pro class.
In moto one, Sta ten pulled the hol esh ot
ahead of Bob Caster, Steve Rawson and the
.rest of the pa ck. As the riders comp leted the
first lap, Pat H ubbs had worked up into third
behi nd Caspe r. Also on the mo ve was H onda
XR600 mounted Bob Rut ten , who had closed
to Rawson 's rear fender. At th is po in t in the
race, the top three positions remained close,
bUI Stat en was on the move and bega n to pick
the pace up a no tch or two. By the halfway
point, Staten had bu ilt up a cushion on the
second pla ce rider , Rutt en. Ru tten had close
compa ny in the form of Hubbs, who was not
abo ut 10 be counted out of th is race just abo ut
yet, Time bega n 10 run out as R uuen worked
hard 10 close the gap between h imself and
the leader. At the checkered £lag it was Staten,
with Rutten a short distance behind, holding
off a hard chargi ng Hubbs. Casper was the
next Pr o past the finish, with Ra wso n
rounding out the top five.
In moto IW O, specta tors were trea ted 10
anot her Staten holeshot, with Casper and
Runen keep ing him compa ny in tum one.
As the trio came through the scoring chicane.
Staten had alr eady pulled to a three bike·
length lead, with Ru tten looking for a way
arou nd Hubbs. As the riders worked their way
into the back sira ightaway Rutten overloo k
H ub bs for second, but left the door open for
a repass a nd Casper j umped back into second.
With two laps remainmg Hubbs failed 10
come arou nd wilh the lead pack, and had
fallen back to fihh as Rawson now took over
third wit h Casper brea thi ng dow n his ·collar.
O n the last la p, Casper made a do·or·die pass
tha t netted him third.- Raw son wou nd up
sett ling for fourth with Hubbs ro undi ng out
the top five.
Ala n O lson won a ho tly-contested pa ir of
molOS in the Old Timers Ma ster class. Mot o
one saw T om White holesh o l with John
Wh it e a nd Ol son in th ird . Jody Weisel and
Geo rge Koh ler ro unded ou t the top five with
a clo ud of du st concea ling everyo ne beh ind
them . Ol son wasted li lli e time In dispo sin g
of Joh n Wh ite in a ro ug h section of th e
course, and on the same lap stu rred h is way
pas t Wh ite 10 ta ke the lead. Once in front,
there was no stopping Ol son. Beh ind Ol son,
George Kohler was work in g his way up
through the ra n ks a nd was closing on T om
Whi te aher passin g J ohn Whi te in the back
whoop sectio n. Kohler looked to have mad e
a pass on Whi te in the whoops wh en Tom
grabbed a handfull of thro ttle a nd held off
Kohler as the pa ir went up the h ill to the
drop-off . From this poin t on, the two di ced
through every tum and dragged down the
straightaways.
Up fro nt, Ol son took the checkered. Behind
hi m, Kohler had opened u p some breath in g
room on Wh ite. Roun ding out the top five
slots in rn o to one were John White and Judy
Weisel.
Olson started out the second rnoto the same
way he ended the first, with a big lead as he
rocketed ou t of the starti ng gate and left
everyone in his roost. Tom " nite was running
in the number two slo t bu t Kohler did n't wa nt
'0 let Olson get too far away an d quickly went
by White. John Wh ite came through the
. scori ng chicane next wi th Ray Pisarski and
Ron Way running in front of Weisel and the
rest of the pack. Weisel pu t a pass on Wa y
only to be repassed in the scoring area
switchback as the action was intense: (ro m
thi rd throu~h six th .
By the midway point, the order was O lson,
Kohler and Tom White. Wh ite had his ha nds
full dealing wit h a hard chargi ng Pisar ski,
who in turn had Way and Weisel a ll over him .
Weisel p icked his spo t wisely, and outbraked
both Pisarski and Way in the corner in (rant
of the stands.
O lson won wi th Kohler in second . Tom
Wh ite was alone in the nu mber three slot .

John Baker gra bbed the spotligh t a t Wabash
Cannonb:>l1 MX by scori ng wins in both the
H eavyweIght Expert a nd Under 24 (years of
age ) classes.
fn the first Heavyweight Expert moto,
Baker roosled to a second· p lace start, but
during the third lap, Baker shot by race leader
Larry Wilm er and took over the con trols.
From then on the race was all Baker 's, as he
mot ored o n for the win over Wilmer, Tom
Sheets and Mall Mal ey.
Baker ca me bac k in the second mol o and
led from sta rt to finis h. Only Witmer could
keep the leader in sigh t fin ishing as the
runner·up. Shee ts a nd Mal ey crashed together
wh ile ballling for th ird . Mal ey recovered first
