Smith tops Mountain View Old Timers National By Dan Meeker SANDY, OR, JULY 27·28 Walt Smith was consistent throughout five motos to top th e O ld Timers Amateur class at the 14th running of the Old T imer's National at Mountain View Raceway. With th e classes divided by both ability and age, the competition was (lerce in vinually every class, but none more so than the Amateur Old Timer class . With a format of five moto.; three on Saturday, two on Sunday, consistency was the key to success. john Foster quickly proved to be th e man to beat as he led the first moto for all eig ht laps. Walt Smith kept the chase up throughout th e moto, but was unable to cut the gap and finished second. Behind th e two .[ro n t· ru n ners, th e racing for third was inten se as Bill Rasmussen outdueled Milt H arden and Paul Galbraith for the po sition at th e fin ish. The seco nd malO saw new names appear among th e [rant-runners as George Webb took off after Foster , wh o had o nce again taken the hol eshot. Late in the race Sm ith, who had started eighth, fin all y succeeded in o ne of his many ch allenges to Webb and took over second. H arden made an impressive pass o n Robert McL ean to take over fourth behind Webb . Then, o n the final lap o f th e mo to, Harden sq ueezed by Webb to finish the moto with a well-earned third. In th e th ird mo to. Foster was forced to th e side of th e trac k min us hi s silencer wh ere he wat ched as Smith took his ro le and led from beginnin g to end. McLean and Ra smus sen passed Ga lbraith to finish seco nd and th ird , while H ar den meth od icall y moved his way th ro ugh the field following a 14th place start to fini sh fifth behind Ga lbraith.
