Ida ho. There were two controversies that evolved: The first involved Ron Naylor not riding a section of the course, and the second invo lved my not shutting off m y engi ne in the p its while refueling. After talking to (the promoter ) Ron Dill on and Naylor, I' m conviced that Nay lor did not blatantly cut th e course. If he knew he was doing something wrong, then wh y did he admit to taking the line in q uestion? Naylor asked Dillon about th is section on Saturday. Dillon misunderstood Naylor or vice versa and Naylor left thinking it was okay to cut off th e particular section . After the start (of th e race) th ere were two riders in front of me. I passed them both in th e first few miles and physically too k the lead. At the end of the 30-m ile loop, my p it man told me to read the pitboard wh ile he was fuelin g my bi ke. I was disgusted when I read that I was in second place, o ne-min u te and 50 seconds down. I thought that I had gone aro und the course as fast as hu manly possible. In the midst of th e confusion, I forgot to sh ut off my engine both times when I stopped for fuel. I knew tha t I was supposed to shu t it off. but because it is not an AMA rule and because we don 't norinally have to do it, I just simply forgot, So, the .bottom line is that I was the fastest guy on th e marked course and Ron was the fastest guy on his course. He obviously had an advantage on the rest of the field. just as I did by no t killing my engine in the pits. So ho w mu ch time did I gain? An d how much time did he ga in? And what's the penal ty for th ese offenses? Unless we can answer these questions, nobody .will ever know who won the 10th and final Su n Valley Gran Pr ix.
