The federal jury trial of five motorcycl ists accused of violating a federal order took pl ace in Santa Ana, California, last week. Rick Sieman, W esley Holme s , Patrick Martin and Barry Van D yke stood accused of deliberately violating a BLM temporary closure order by purposel y ente ring a closed area of the Mojave Desert n ear th e st art area o f th e cancelled Barstow-to-Vegas race last November. The fifth member of th e group, Lowell Webb was accu sed of" violating the closure order by crossi ng into prohibited land along the race course. Seirnan, Holmes, Martin and Van Dyke, the son of actor Dick Van Dyke, were found guilty and fined $850. Webb was found not guilty. Class Three-time Grand National Champ ion Ricky Graham showed up at th e Peoria TT aboa rd a HarleyDavidson XR600, p repared by tuner Johnny Goad. The race ma rked a couple of first s for the new team . Graham , a longtime Honda-onl y ride r, ha s not com peted aboard a Harl ey since 1982, and tuner Goad has never prepared a TT machine. "We didn ' t kn ow what we were goi ng to race until a few da ys ago ," sa id Graham. "Then Johnny pulled out thi s bik e that was set up for asphalt racing. He did a great job with it." Graham went on to fin ish fourth in the main event, topped only by the three factory Harl eys of Chris Carr, Scott Parker and Kevin Atherton. Schwantz runs down. Rainey in Britain earn 'Lucky Strike Suzuki's Kevin Schwantz (right) chased down and beat Marlboro Yamaha 's Wa yne Ra iney by .788-of-asecond to win his third straight British G P at Donin gton Park on August 4. The win was Schwantz's fourth of the season, moving him into a tie wit h Rain ey for the most wins this seaso n. Rainey, however, managed to increa se h is cha mpionship points lead -over Rothmans Honda's Michael Doohan to 10 points, 185-175, with Dooh an finish in g third in Engla nd. Marl boro Yamaha's John Kocinski finished fourth with Rothmans Honda's Wayne Gar dn er fifth and Cagiva's Eddie Lawson sixth. England's Ron Haslam fin ished a creditable 12th on the J oh n Player Special Norton. The 250cc GP was won by championship leader Luca Cadalora on the Roth mans Honda. Cadalora nipped Repsol Honda's Carlos Cardus by .752-of-a-second after 26 laps at Donington Park. H B H onda's Helmu t Bradl finished third, 2.155 behind Cadalora . Cadalora leads the title chase by 16 points over Bradl , 189-173. Ca rdu s is th ird with 157 points. World Champion Loris Capirossi rode hi s AG V Pil eri Cor se Honda to a 13.249second win over his teammate Fausto Gre sini in England. German y's Peter Oettl finished third on his Bakker Racing Rotax, Capirossi leads Gresin, 171-153, in the l25cc World Championship point standings. T Before th e 's tan o f the Peoria TT main event, announcers Dave Despain and Larry Maiers teased 35:year old Cam el Pro veteran Steve Morehead about his recent win at an invitational TT race held in Spain. There was a. former World 250cc Motocross Champion (Heinz Kinigadner) in the race, and I kicked his ass!" With the opening round of the AMA Na tional Championship 500cc MX Series set to get underway August II at Spring Creek MX Park in Millevill e, Minnesota , Honda's J e a n - M ic h elBayle will be hoping to become th e fir st rider ever to win th e AMA Supercross and National Championsh ip 250 and 500cc MX titles all in th e same year. Bayle, who wra pped up the 250cc National Championship Series titl e at th e August 4 Southwick National, ea rl ie r ea rned th e 1991 Camel Supercross Series titl e, Speaking of Jean-Michel Bayle, he is only th e second rider to win an AMA National Championship MX title without scoring an overall victory. The ' onl y other rider to do so was Gary Jones, who clinched h is fourth consecutive AMA 250cc MX National Championship number-one p late aboard a Can-Am without scori ng an overa ll win in 1974. Donnie Schmit, th e reigning 125cc World Ch ampion from Minnesota, who broke hi s thumb and collarbone in May, crashed during practice for the August 4 German 125cc MX GP and reinjured the th umb. Schmit started the first mot o, but was forced to pull out whe n he got a flat tire and th e pa in in his han d became too great. Word of th e dea th of Soichiro Honda, 84, the .fou nder of the Japanese motorcycle and automobile manufacturing firm , reached us just as we were ready to send this issue to pr ess on Monday , August 5. Honda passed away in Tokyo. More details next week.
