'''T h is is to o easy,' I 'th o u g h t," Quarterley said later. " I was Catching the goo d guys. I was staying with them unt il it started sputtering." The New Englander diagnosed the problem as either a valve sp ring problem or an ignition failu re; he was forced to slow and eventually finished sixth. Fifth place went to Spencer, who suffered through a horrible start, The th ree-time World Champion then battled with a four-man pack of McMurter, Crevier, and Guenette, before moving past them all by the II th lap and setting off after Picotte and Quarterley. He passed Picotte on the 16th lap and Quarterley a couple of laps later. Picotte held on to sevent h on the Ducati V-twin with McMurter getting the better of Guenette after Crevier crashed, blaming McMurter: " I was trying to ace him (McMurter) on the outside and for some reason he stood it up and ran me off," Crevier said. "Racing shouldn 't be that serious." Crevier was also feeling the effects of a twi sted ankle he 'd suffered by clipping a hay bal e with his left foot during Sunday morning's practice. Following th e Canadian du o across the line was Adamo, who is quietly having the best Superbike season of his career on the G ia Ca Moto Ducati. Notably mi ssin g from th e top of the standings was Commonwealth Honda 's Rich Arnaiz. The Californian could only man age a 13th place finish after hurtin g h is right hand in a 600cc Supersport cras h earlier in th e da y. Arnaiz battled for the en tire race with first-timer Schwanbach, who got the bett er of th e duel. " It was serious racing, that's for sure, " DuHamel said after th e race. " I didn 't give up; I pushed bu t I just ran out of laps. Another five laps would have mad e it a lot closer, th at's for sure." DuHam el wasn 't even supposed to be at Mid-Ohio as hi s con trac t wit h Kawasaki France called for him to be at an en durance race in Malaysia. The Canadi an , how ever, go t out of the agreement and will not miss any of the remaining AMA National s. Stevens , whose last race win came in a 600cc Supersport event at Road Eventual winner Thomas Stevens (II) holds off Miguel DuHamel (!17) and Smtt RusscI1as they chase down KippAmerica las t May, was gracious in victory as he has been in defeat : " I can' t say eno ugh abo ut these gu ys. These guys ride reall y well. We seem to bring out the best in each other and I think we'r e developing into th e next GP guys - I hope. Everyone worked real hard - my mechanic Jim Leonard.
