The winn ers were anno unced Frida y, J u ne 28, a t th e awards sessio n of the VJCA National Leadership Conference held a t the Kentucky Fai r and Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The Mot or cycle' Service Tech nol ogy Contest was one of 55 hands-on contests in trade, technical, and health related field s in which 3000 state cham p io ns competed. T he VICA is the nationa l organization of ove r 300,000 students in trade, industrial, techn ical , and health occupa tio ns. Since 1965 the VICA Uni ted Sta tes Skill O lympics has been an esteemed ann ua l competition tha t recognizes the ach ievements of vocat io na l stude nts and enco urages the m to strive for excelle nce and pride in their chosen occupa tio ns. The contests are carefully pl anned by . technica l com mi ttees mad e up of industry representatives and are designed to test the en try level skills needed to perform successf ully in a given occupation . The Motorcycle Service Techno logy co ntestants performed entry level tasks in cha ssis and drive trai n service, precision meas uring, electrical testing, carburetor servi ce, valve adj us tme nts, and referen cing parts and service information. This is the second year for the mot orcycle competition which was co-chaired by Joe Koury and Ca ndace Mead of Honda with T om Dah l of Mot or cycle Mecha n ics Institu te. Also serving on the technical com mittee and writ ing the co ntes t were John Yur efcic and Tom Pu gh of Yam ah a, Ron Pl ender of H arl ey-Davidso n, Don Church of Kawasak i, a nd Mark Hasenberg of Snap- on Tools. Each of the four motorcycle manufacturers spo nsored two of the eig h t work stations that made up the day lon g test. Thirt y-two industr y judges evaluated the 28 co ntes tants. T he first p lace go ld meda lists in th e h igh 'school and po stsecondary school levels were aw arded over $35,000 in prizes includin g: scho larshi ps to Mo torcycle Mechan ics Institu te in Phoenix, Arizona; fo ur-week internships at America n H on da in Torrance, Ca lifo rnia; and 300 plus pi ece tool sets, ro ll cabinets, and box es from Sna p-o n Tools. The schools of the first place winners were awarded mot or cycles from H onda, pu ller sets by Snap-on T ool s, and training aids from H onda, Kawasaki and Yamaha.
