The 69th Annual Barbara Friterne Classic HaU Mile will take place at the Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, Maryland, o n July 4. All-Star Match Races Rlanned for '92 I magine a series of road races over a two-day period o n one of America's premier circuits, p itti ng a team of North America's best historic racers and past champions against a stellar squad representing the rest of the world. Picture these com pet itors a board immaculate 500cc machines from the golden age of Grand Prix racing , the late 1950s through early '70s. Too good to be true? Well , the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AH R MA) is work in g out the details of just such an event for 1992. Jeff Smith, AH R MA executive director, says negot iations are in progress with prospective team members and with circuits such as Daytona International Speedway. Rob Iannucci of Team Ob solete has been appointed team selection coordinator and has been con tacting potential riders and machine own ers. A preliminary lineup for the North America team incl udes Dick Mann as th e non-riding team cap tai n, with the riding chores being handled by fellow Grand National Ch ampions and Daytona 200 winners Roger Reiman and Gary Nixon , Daytona 200 winner Don Emde, Yvon DuHamel, Don Vesco, Mike Baldwin and Dave Roper. World Team hopefuls include form er World Ch ampions John Surtees, . Phil Read and Kent Anderson, Classic Bike National Champions J ohn Cornshaw and Bob Newb y, Manx GP winner Dave Pither, and form er Italian National Champion Robert o Gallina. The format will be fou r races over two days, with the results scored by team, expla ined Smith. "This event will be a festival of some of the best road racers from yesteryear riding the same type of motorcycles on which th ey competed and won," Smith sai d. "Combine the match races with AH RMA's 11 classes spanning more than a half-century of motorcycle competition, and yet have an event that no enth usiast will want to miss. " . Alt hough the 1991 AMA Camel Supercross Series has already been clinched by Team Honda's Jean-Michel Bayle, there is still a big chunk of dough up for grabs that will be decided at the Los Angeles Supercross on June 22, the final round of the series . T he Coors Silver Bullet Showdown has yet to be decided, and the winner will receive $25,000. T hroug hout the 1991 Ca mel Supercross season, the winner of the fastest hea t race earned one point towards the Showdown 'and the rider wit h the mos t points accumulated at the end of the 17-race series (not including th e Daytona Supercross) will take ho me the cash. Following th e San Jo se Supercr oss, Damon Bradshaw leads the points race with five, while Jeff Matias evich and Bayle are tied with four. In case of a tie, th e rider with the most heat race wins, regardless of qualifying times, will be declared the winner. AMA's pro fessional mo tocross manager Roy Janson had a scary mo ment in San J ose, Cal iforni a, while a ttending round 17 of the AMA Camel Supercross Series. Janson had just bought a bra nd new van and decided to drive to San Jose from his home state of Ohio. He was dr ivi ng bac k from Spartan Stadi um following Press Day, J une 13, and had a head-on collision with another motorist j anson was bruised but otherwise unhurt in the accident, bu t the driver of the other car had to be pried out of her vehicle with the Jaws of Life and was taken to th e hospita l with a broken leg and neck injuries. According to the OM RRA , details regarding th e cause of the accident are not clear, although it is known that Dennis was involved in a multi-bike crash at the entrance to the race track's back stra ightaway.
