Gibony got the ball rolling by storming to the heat race win in the 500cc Pre-Unit class, aboard his 1965 Matchless-powered Rickman. Following Gibony across the line was Butch Cochran, while Ross Poitras and Mark Julian led the way in the second heat race. In the final , most of the riders went down in the first turn and a restart was ordered. Gibony proved to be a little too anxious at the start, and was sen t to the back row . Kle eve H odson grabbed the hol eshot ahead of Cochran, Bob Lindsey, Julian and Poi tras. Gibony stormed through th e field after starting in last place, and took over second on lap two. Once in to second, Gibony set his sights on H odson and sailed past on lap three. On ce in fro nt , Gibony set sail and cru ised to the win . Murphy returned in the Gran Prix race, that combined all of the day's overall winners, and roosted off with the win in similar fashion. Scott Allen scored the win in the first 125cc heat race ahead of Keith Anderson. Heat two featured a heated battle between Craig Bowman and Erik Giersten. The two riders dueled for the entire eight laps, but it was Bowman who greeted the checkered flag in first. Giersten darted off the lin e in th e final , and held the lead for four laps until Bowman charged past. Giersten and Bowman diced for a few laps , until Allen joined in and passed them both.
