South African Greg Albertyn , cha rged for th e first 20 minutes and stormed from l Sth at.the start to fourth . Surratt had also ch arged up to six th behind Yves D emaria within 30 minutes. Each of th e title ca ndi da tes maintai ned at least 10 seconds between the mselves, a nd Everts ' lead grew to 18 seco nds over Schmit a t th e finish. Moore crossed th e line 23 seconds beh ind in th ird with Albertyn finishin g fourth, more than 20 seconds beh ind the American. Demaria held on to fifth while Su rratt began to feel th e pain from his dam aged thumb and had to make way for Mar cel Van Drunen in the clo sin g stages. "I kn ew that I had to get to th e front quickly," sai d Everts. " I didn 't worry abou t Don ny after that. I just concentrated on my la p times so that I knew I was maintaining my pace.
