Starting o n the 20-yard lin e, 53-year-old Gray smoked l 8-year -old j ohn Aden on the start. By lap rw o , th e veteran had a sizab le lead o n hi , RAZ Video Weslak e while the rest of the riders were scra mbli ng for po sition. As Gray was bui ldi ng up h is lead, Aden had his ha nds full as Sha wn McConnell cam e up to challenge th e teen ager for second o n lap two. Tucked in ju st beh ind McConnell were former National Champions Brad Ox ley and Steve Lu cero. Aden ma naged to fend them off until j ust before the halfway po ints. McConnell was the first 10 ta ke the h igh school sen ior wh en he knifed hi s way underneath on lap four. Ox ley a nd Lu cero soo n followed wh en Aden drifted wide o ut of tum four. McCo n nell had a clear sho t at Gray, but he had qu ite a bit of distan ce to make u p . At th e same tim e, he was concerned with O xley, an d was g uardi ng th e pole so Oxley wou ldn't get by and ta ke second. On lap six, McConnell fina lly started 10 put a dent into Gray's advantage. By the time th ey took the w hi te fl ag , McC onnell was within two len gth s, bu t he wh eeli ed off tum two. As th ey slid th rough turn th ree th e last time, Gray's air filte r sa iled off th e motorcycle, but it was too lat e to ca use any pr oblem s and he look j erry Kin g's chec kered n ag for hi s first Cos ta Mesa wi n since .1989. Gray received a sta nding ovation as he look h is victory lap after the race and he was mo bbed by fellow riders, officia ls and mechanics as he returned to th e pi ts. T he Scra tch main was a Russell Racing benef it as th e team 's three First Divi sion riders fin ished in th e first three spots. Clarke Co leman powered to the Iirst-rno to holeshot with Greg Marti nez, Rob Petrin a nd Baker in tow. Baker shot through th e frontrunners and assumed the lead by th e second lap. On ce o ut front, Baker opened a tremen do us lead and o nly slowed in the la te stages o r the mote wh en sto mach cramps and goggle problems forced him make a pi, sto p. " I had to stop for a mo men t to correct my gogg les and sett le my sto mach," Bak er sa id. " Fort una tely I had a big lead " '0 u~ your ~hop \1M Coleman slip ped backwards as he was pas sed by Martmez for seco nd and Petrin for third by the midway point in the rnoto, Petri n applied pressure to Martinez la te in the mota and mad e th e ~ss for second place, which he held to the finish. Baker had th e lead by the end of the first lap of the second moto and simply walked away to the finish . Martinez and Petrin pi cked up where th ey left off in th e first moto and engaged in a fierce battle for seco nd Petrin made th e mov e o n Martin ez three laps from the finis h and moved to second [or good . Martinez slowed further and alm ost lost third to a hard-char ging Geor~e Wallace. When the chec kered n ag waved II was Baker by · 25 seconds over Petrin, Martinez and Wallace. Tracy Ash er scored wins in both the 125 and 250cc Novice classes. Asher 's toughest match ca me in th e form of Mark Allen in the 125cc cla ss, Allen , wh o had never won a single rnot o, sim ply smo ked th e competi tion with a wrre-to-wire, runaway WIn In mota one, Ash er sta rted poorly and worked up to second by th e end of the rnoto in front of Shawn, Obrien and Aaro n Wasn ea. All en aga in put h is Simi Valley Kawasaki in to the lead a t the start o f the second rnot o wi th Asher glued to his back fender. The two riders in stantly pulled away from Brian Nail , Brad Shultz and Garey Carlson. All en and Asher exchanged the lead a few times with Asher faster ihrough the tight sectio ns of th e track and Allen faster in the high-speed sand wash areas. Allen experie nced problems o n the sixth lap when he cam e up two feel short on a set of triples which sent him over the bars . Asher took advantage and scoo ted away to an easy victory while Allen remounted third. behind Carlson , who was riding with loose handlebars .
