Tichenor, wh o earned $ 1100 for his 10th-pl ace fin ish in the Meadowlands Supercr oss the ni ght before, and several o ther top pri vateers tra vell ed south from New J ersey to co mpe te in the event, which a lso attracted mor e than 500 Amateur class en tra nts. At the start of the first 125cc Pro moto, Mike Brown , the runner-up in th e previous ni gh t' s l25cc Eas tern Regional main in the Meadowlands, grabbed th e holesho t followed by loca l rider Tom Welch. By the end of th e first lap, T ichenor and Doug Dub ach ·had moved by Welch and they set off to battle for second. Brown pulled ou t a five-second lead , but at the halfway point hi s Honda coasted to a stop. Dubach shot into the lead wh en he jumped past T ichenor, and the .two T stayed toge ther until the checkered flag where Dubach beat Tichenor. Cliff Palmer and Barry Car sten fin ished third and fourth. Dubach got stu ck in the gate at the start of moto two an d watc hed as Tichenor grabbed the lead. Brown was quickly in Tich enor's sha dow and as th e two banged bars th eir blisterin g pace carried them away from th e pack. Dubach was on a fast pa ce of his own as he worked up fro m last to sevent h by the halfw ay mark. At the end of the race Tichenor was able to break away from Brown to score the win, wh ile Dubach made a last-lap pa ss on Carsten to cla im third at the finish. Ron Lechien blasted his Pro Mo tion Kawasak i KX500 into the lead at the sta rt of the firs t 250/ 50Occ Pro rno to wit h Dubach, T ichenor, Bro wn and Keith Bowen tucked in behin d. The top five quickl y gai ned an advantage over th e rest of the pa ck, and Lech ien led th e pack until a blown head ga sket slowed his charge. Du bach took over in the lead with T ichenor, Brown and Bowen in tight formation j us t behind. They stayed th at wa y and crossed th e fini sh line togeth er bu t wit h no cha nge in the order. Carsten fin ish ed fifth wh ile Lechien limped hom e for sixth . Crai g, who won the second heat and sta rted on o ne of the back ro ws, quickly moved up from sevent h to third behind former Ul tra cross Cha mpio n Jim H o lley. Crai g passed Holley o n lap three and th en hounded Voh land to the finis h line wh ere he finished second , just a few feet behind Vohland. H oll ey stayed with Craig and Voh land until he fell on lap eig ht, wh ich a llo wed La rry Broo ks, who won hea t two and started just behind Craig, to tak e o ve r th ird.
