Davis devastating at Perris By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, MAY 18ยท19 y Davis was unstoppable as he won every single mota he entered during th e two-day Wh it e Bros . Four Stro ke World Championships held at Perris Raceway. Two tracks were pr epared, one for eac h day's rac e. Saturday featured a smooth, u ltra- high -speed IT co urse that cha llenged the rid ers' co u rage while Su nday 's trac k featured a traditional motocross course. Tom a nd Dan White held th e even t for th e fou rth straight year and were pl eased with all as pec ts o f th e even t. " The event gets bigger eac h year a nd this race get s a tten tion worldwide," T om White said. "Four-Stroke racing is th e most fun type of racing a nd it's a pity so many ra ce promoters have let th em die out. Goat Breker (G FI promoter ) loves four-strokes and wants thi s event to continue, and with h is su p port we will run this event for many years to come." In Saturd ay's Expert TT Davi s, aboard a spec ia lly-bu ilt ATK560, a nd defe nding TT . cham p Breker had a two -mota duel for the win. Breker too k the holeshot in the first mota on a Baja Racing Products Suzuki DR 350 built by Jim Labine a nd tuned by four-time AMA .Go lden Wren ch Awa rd wi n ne r Chris H aines. Breker and Davi s left th e rest o f the pack far behind and engaged in a clos ely contested battle for the lead . Bo th Breker and Dav is seemed even ly ma tched in both ri ding spee d and bike perform ance, which forced Davis to make a n aggressi ve move on Breker down th e front straight for th e lead. Davis ca me alongside Breker and they ac tually co n nec ted while wide open. The two riders co nt in ued to battle the duration of the mota with Davi s taking th e win followed by Breker and Mike Beier. Dav is led every lap o f th e second 10lap mota with Breker two bike lengths behind the wh ole way. Dav is aga in took th e checkered flag with Breker very clos e behind while Beier finished a distant third. T 30 Davi s mixed it up la ter in th e day with Ra ce Tech rider, Brian Manley and 1988 l 25cc MX National Champ io n George H olla nd , who came o ut of ret ireme nt to ri de the event, in th e O pen Pro event. H o lland, aboard a big-bore KTM , led most of bo th motos but was side lined with mechanica l pro blems . Dav is and Manley had a good second-mota ba tt le th a t Davis sett led wi th a last-la p pass fo r th e mota a nd overa ll win. Davi s sto rmed to th e first rnoto win in th e Open Pro MX feature event o n Sunday. Only Erik Keh oe co uld keep Davi s in sigh t during th e first mot o. Defending Pro Champion G reg Zitterkopf ra n with Davis and Kehoe early in th e race but fad ed o ff th e pace as th e mot a wore o n. Davis hol esh ot the seco nd mot o whi le Keh oe a nd Zitt erk opf cras hed in th e second turn. "Ty star ted drifting wide in the first tu rn a nd I had to let off and switch l in es," Keh o e sai d. " I lost so me mome ntu m a nd Zitter kopf p u lled a lo ngside, neith er one o f us shut off." Both riders smashed to th e ground wh ile Davis escaped unharmed. Davis scoo ted away to victor y followed by Mik e Young and Ra ndy Moody, both ri di ng stoc k H u sq va rn as. Davi s' weekend ' o f fu n earned him nearly $1400 of the $2 100 Pro purse provided by GFI Racing. Ray Groom su ccessfully defe nded his 80cc Modified P ro MX class title wi th a double mot o victory. Groom was su rp rised in th e fir st mot o by Craig Decker on a water-cooled KXR80 big wheel. Decker led th e race to th e white flag when his co untersha ft sp li t in two and ended hi s day of racing. " I o nly ro de the bik e for about 15 minutes before the race," said Decker. " I should hav e won." With Decker ou t of th e race, Groom cruised to the victory foll owed b y Bobby Langin and Eri c Torkko. In the second mota Torkko pres sured Groom u nti l Groom pulled Ray Groom (15) beat Eric Torkko (4) and Bob Langin (2) in the 80cc Modified class. away for another easy win. Torkko he ld on to second while Langin came out on top of a battle for third with Scott Murphy. J im my O 'Neal and Shaun Perolio finished first and second overall in the XR60 Stock class after defending Stock class champ Scott Murphy crashed in th e second mo ta. r: "I was trying to make a pass to the in side of the third pl ace gu y when I hit a bump that threw me into the banners," Murphy said. "The banners got caught insi de my front and rear wh eels and caused me to lose all the power." O'Neal won with 3-1 mota finishes , beatin g Perolio 's 2-2 finish es while Jay Spratt ro u nded out th e top three. Murp hy won the first moto, but h is cra sh-filled seco nd mota rendered h im fifth for th e day . Murphy came back la ter to win th e 0-200 Novice class. David Gl ass was th e king of th e Open Nov ice class as he scored a fou rmota sweep in the TT and MX events. Gl ass tapped Mar c Prince and Bert Schul ties during Sunday's MX event, and overcame a second-mota crash in Saturday's TT race to charge through th e pack and pass Robert Fies ler late in th e mota for the win. Pete Murray swept both motos of Sunda y's Vet Pro race on a La Habra Husky 610. Murray went unchallenged while Rob Ru tten charged to ' second overall by beating Randy Rodriquez. Not just for kids he Adult XR80 class is a growing part of four-stro ke racing, and the cost of these co mpe titive machines is growing as well. Modified Pro class winner Ray Groom says he spe nt nearly 100 hours and spe nt about $2000 o n his Kawasakr / Hon da h yb rid. Building o ne of these machines usually req uires two bikes, one for the. frame and the other for the engine. T he frames th en have to be modified to fit the en gines, and many other trick parts are added to boost performance, __ "They're fu n to build," says Groom. "Half the fun of racing them is building the bike and keeping i t together. " T he other half of the fun comes on the track, where me relativel-y slow speeds produce close racing.
