medal ist, J eff Fredette, whil e 350cc Husaberg-rnounted David Rhodes scored sixth overall, as well as the overall in the Four-Stroke division. Defending National Cross Country and Hare Scrambles Champion Scott Summers, 'p ilo ting a H onda XR600, was seventh. Su mmers was also the Open Four-Stroke clas s victor. Eighth overall, as well as the O pen Two-Stroke class wi n ner, was Husqvarna's Fred H oess, who is a nothe r ISDE veteren . The two-da y event was hosted by the ' Stump Jumpers M.C., th o u gh members from variou s local clubs offered a lendi ng hand as wel l. T he co urse wa s lai d o ut by 10-ti m e National End uro C hampion Di ck Burleson and ISDE rider Ala n Ra nd t o n land that Burleson said was, at one ti me many years ago, covered by a g lacier. Accordi ng to Burleso n , when the g lacier mel ted, it left big holes in the ground, providing what many of the riders descri bed as a "supercross like" course. "It was really, really fun terr ain ," said winner Hatch. "The entire area looked liked it was carpet bombed there wer e jumps, mounds of dirt and whoops everywhere. It was like the whole da y was o ne gi ant su percro ss through the woods. Hawkins, H ough , Dave Bertram, H oess, myself a nd a couple of other guys bumped around so we could all get on the exact same minute, so we were all just freigh ttraining-it through the woods and just having a blast doubling and tripl ing (ju m ping) through th e woods." Hough simply sai d of the terrain : " It was weird, really weird." Day one featured two loops totaling approximately 110 mil es, including five special terra in a nd grass track tests, while day two featured one 70-m ile loop, i ncl ud in g th r ee special test sectio ns , p lus a fin al mot ocross specia l test at the end of the day . " T he tests were pretty much right u p my alley," said H atch, who ro de a Gold Sport Cycle (Ithaca, N.Y.)/ Moose Ra cing/Am erican Suzu ki backed RMX250. " I used to ri de a lot of motocr oss a nd so me supercross a while back, so it mad e it just that much easier for me on th e trail and in the special tests. That really hel ped. Plus, everything was just working great wi th my bike. I had everything dialed in perfectly for theenduro, especially the suspension. I didn 't have to worry about how I was going to land off the jumps or anything. Basically, in the tests I could ride rea l smooth and flu ent '- not real aggressive. " Hatch's low special test times shot him to the front of the pack at the end of day one. He had scored the fastest times in tltree of the tests, and Hawkins •had the fastest times in the other two. But close in Hatch's wake after the first day was Hawkins, Sm ith and Hough. . "I had some good runs on the pretty tight and technical tests, but I didn't do so good on the ones that were wide open with the big bumps," sa id Hough. Class-wise, Hawkins led the 125cc division, Hatch the 25Occ, Hoess the Open, Rhodes the 350cc Four-Stoke and Summers the Open Four-Stroke. Defending N ational R eliabil i ty Enduro Champion Dave Bertam was leading the Open class until 15-20 miles from the end of day o ne wh en he ran into mechanical problems. " Everythin g was going gr eat, I had good times and I was ru nning about third overall when the crank seal went out," said Bertram. " We split the cases and were up till 9:30 that night ge tting it buffed out. I reimpounded my bike and rode Sunday." Scott Summers (118) leads Drew Smith (216) and Brian Mull (217) in a special test. Summers won the Open Four-Stroke class. Fred Hoess was the winner in th e 500cc class after finishing eig hth overall. David Rhodes finis hed sixth overall to score the win in the 350cc Four-Stroke class. I Summers ' chances of overalling th e event were also blown on th e first day when he encountered odometer problems and dr opped one tra il penalty (60 points). " A rock hit the odometer drive cable guide and I was concerned that the se nso r .woul d get broken," said Summers. " I stopped to fix the guide and was trying to figure things in my head. T wo or three checks later I realized I was wro ng." Once again, Hatch railed the three special tests on da y two, which kept h im on top of the heap heading into the final motocross test, which was described by Ha tch as, " ex tremely fast and a little bit scary." Hough said, " It was wide o pe n across th ese su percross whoop s strange." After H awkins roosted a way a nd scored th e 125cc class moto win, the start of the 250cc mo to saw Hatch jam in to the ea rly lead. Both Smith and .Hough crashed in the first tum an d played catch-up for the rest of the race. Smith and H ough even tually moved in to secon d and third , respectivel y, bu t ra n o ut of time to ca tch winner H a tch . Bertram won the Open class mot o but not wi thout a figh t from T om Webb and Hoess. In the Four-Stroke bout, Summers motored away from Rhodes, scoring the- moto win, but it was Rhodes wr apping up the overall Four-Strok e class win. " It was a good event," said Hough, who is nursing a sore kn ee which he o rigi n ially inj ured two years ago at the 1989 ISDE in France. "They (th e club) gav e us plenty of time at th e chec ks, but the trai l was so demanding th a t you had to work all the tim e." H ough, who wa s edged out by Ber tram for th e 1990 National Rel iabil ity Enduro Cha mpionsh ip title and wh o opted no t to participate in th e 1990 ISDE in Sweden , has not yet decided whe ther or not he'll co mpete in the 1991 ISDE in Czechoslovakia th is fall even if he does q ualify. "I'm j us t goi ng to wait and see how things are going for me in the Na tio nal Enduro Ser ies," said Hough . "1£ I' m noi i n th e h u n t in the ' Nation a l En duros, then I might have my knee operated on (which cou ld prevent him from competing in the ISDE ). 1£ I am in the hunt, th en I' ll wait until the winter to get my knee fixed and will most likely go to th e Six Da ys. But we're just goi ng to have to see what ha p pe ns." Cl¥ Results (Unofficial) 0 / A: I. Steve Hatch (Suz) 3377 p ts; 2. Randy Hawkin s (Suz) 3403; 3. Chris Smith (KT M) 3412; -I.
