Letters to theeditor
Fourteen yea rs later
During the October 2, 1977 AMA
Region al Ch ampions hip Half Mile at
Okl ah oma City , I was fortunate to set
a track record at 24 seconds flat. The
race was a prel ude to Asco t and th e
deciding Grand Nati on al Championship races after a season of neck-toneck racing by the top conte nders. To
my kn owledge, th ere were several
riders in the top 10 in the Nati onal
po int sta ndi ngs who sho wed up to race
tha t day. one of th em being my good'
friend T ed "Bood y who was in second
p lace at that tim e.
It was th e fastest main event I ever
ran and the track was perfect for recordbreaking performances with Terry
Poovey the eventual winner.
Cycle N ews covered the race and I
thought a rememberance of it would
be a good prelude to how fast one can
expec t the July 27 Oklahoma City
Nation al will be. The field will include
hometown rider Ronnie Jones, who
participated back in 1977.
forfeited for any delays not caused by
bad weather or rider injury. IE a race
gets started on tim e, it will end at a
reasonable time. IE these gu ys begin to
get hit in the pocketbook. you will see
races run offl ike clockwork. The fans
would certain ly enjoy it and I'm sure
th e riders would al so.
Race fans , we are the ones who are
bankrolling these even ts and we do
ha ve the right to expect a race program
to be run in a professional and timely
manner.
