Childress pocketed $600 for his pair of victories. Childress and Shane T em p leton stormed into the first tum in the 125cc Pro main event . Childress emerged with the lead , whil e T odd Benn ick snuck under T empleton and took over second. By lap two of the 20 lap race, Ch ildress had already began to establish a lead. Chi ldress scored the win with a comfo rtable lead over Benn ick and Temp leto n. Kevin Walk er grabbed the holesh ot a t the start of the 250cc Pro main , with Bennick, Childress and Sla te in ho t pu rsuit, Chi ld ress spe nt a few lap s dicing with Bennick , but eventually mo tored pa st and set after Walker. On la p ni ne, Chi ld ress closed o n the lead er, bu t sudden ly found himself in th e lead wh en Walker pulled from the track with an inj ured arm. Once o u t front, Chi ld ress proceeded to open a commandi ng lead . Chi ldress scored hi s second win of the . n ight ahead of Bennick, Slate and Pr octor. Mike Trexler was quickest off the lin e in the 250cc B main wi th J eff Mush ala and Mike Keller in tow . By the halfway po int of the 10-lap race, Mu sh ala had closed o n Trexler and the two riders swa pped th e lead severa l tim es. At the fin ish it was Trexler A 28 scori ng the win, with Mu shala close behind. Keller held o nto th ird place. Wes Cave ran off and left th e 125cc B class with a wire to wire win over J osh Dombrosky arid Forsyth Motospo rts spo nsor ed Bill y Cha rles. T im Terrell powered his Ho nda in to the lead at the start of the 250cc C ma in, whi le Billy Ow ensby pulled ahea d of James Hensl ee for second. On the fo urth lap , Ow en sby took the lead fro m T err ell , bu t T erre ll gra bbed it back o n the next lap . With two laps to go, Owen sby fou nd his spot and sq ueezed past T errell for good. The win went to Ow ensb y, foll owed close ly by Terrell wi th H enslee third. J oel Clampitt and Bruce Hutchins fill ed o u t the top five. Scott Hedger and Wayne Eller sha red the holeshot in the l25cc main , with Eller taking the lead on lap th ree of the 10-lap race. Pau l Leigh wat ched the actio n from th ird. Hedger dropped to fou rth and later cras hed ha rd. Leigh grabbed second pl ace and clo sed o n Eller, but Leigh and Hedrick followed in th ird and four th , respectivel y. Rich ie and Robbie Hort on were the do min ant for ces in the Min i cla sses, with T ravis Rominger edgi ng Bryan Stevens for runner-up hon ors in the 85cc (12-15 year-old) division beh ind Richi e Horton. " I really wa nted to win th is o ne bad ," said an ela ted Lawrence. " No w I want to keep my mo mentum up -for the Las Vegas supercross." Along wi th the motorcycles, truc ks, buggies and ATVs help to fill the n ight's program. A mu lti -row sta rti ng . forma t is used, and riders mu st q ual ify for the ir po sitions in a prelim ina ry heat race. The top 10 riders from each of the two heats are adva nced to th e fin a l, wi th the top finis hers placed towards the back to make for mor e exciting raci ng. Defen din g U l tracross Champion Michael Ra y Craig topped the first heat after ba ng ing bars wi th T eam' Green 's Larry Brooks th roughout th e racc. Brett Devries, Andy Grid er and Scott Steffy ro unded out th e top five. Lawrence recovered from a poor start to fin ish in the sixth spot. "T he track isn ' t very technical ," said Brooks. " It 's all o ne line, and th ere's now here to pass." Man y riders had th e sa me co mplaint, as th e Ultracross tracks are bett er su i ted to th e four wheel comperi tors. Kyle Lew is look co nt ro l of the second heat early in the race and fended off th e cha rges of Tommy Clowers and Lowell T ho mso n. On a blustery, co ld ni ght punctuated by heavy drizzle, Bobby Sch war tz a nd J osh Larse n won the seaso n opening Divi sion One ma ins. Sta rting in ga te th ree, Schwar tz trailed Na tio na l Cha m pion Mike Faria as the Scra tch mai n Iiel d hit turn o ne the fir st time. Fari a stayed ril: ht to the edge of th e din lin e, leavin g very li ttle room as he cam e off the second tu rn . Very liule room is all Sch wartz needed. In a daring pass, th e 34-year-old vetera n pu shed his Red Devil a nd Freedom Firew orks/ Frame Shop/ST P/CTi Bra ce/ Oakley G M betwee n Faria and the wall . By th e time they reach ed turn three, Schwartz had secu red th e lead . Bill y Hamill , visiti ng from En gland, was tryi ng to catch the leaders when a mechanical proble m for ced him out o n lap two. The race ended wit h Sch wartz, th e track 's a ll-time victory lead er, mo ving away from Faria for th e seaso n-ope n ing victory. Third went to Fari a 's tea-mmat e Larsen. When th e eig h t-lap Handicap main left the line, th e drizzle intensified. J ohn Aden started ·a t th e front of the eigh t-rider field, Before be exited tum two, Aden found h im sdf in second as Don Odom passed him for th e lead. La rsen also lought his way past Aden and by the end of th e second lap he was hounding Od om. Odom held La rsen bade. until lap three when he succumbed to th e two-time Junior Na tiona l Ch ampion 's pressure. On the same lap, Hamill had anoth er problem when he ran o u t of tear -offs and mud covered hi s goggles. H e co uldn ' t see and slammed the cra sh- wa ll. exiti ng tum two . Larsen , o n th e Russell Racing /Prime T ickei/Shoe i/ O urv Grip/Sunsh in e Carpets GM co nstruc ted a commanding lead and by th e time Fari a relieved adorn of second o n lap seven , Larsen was go ne. He won th e race by a half stra igh t o ver Far ia, Odom and Aden . Former mot ocr oss ra cer Rus s Wageman took his Weslake to wins in his heat and the Division T wo main event.
