Sidecar GP sighting lap 3:10 p.m Sidecar GP warm-up lap 3:15 p.m Sidecar Grand Prix (30 laps , 65.88 mi les) old finished second to Rainey in last year's title chase, winning five GPs along the way. Schwantz, however, crashed out of five GPs a nd fini shed a distant 67 points behind Rainey. As he has in three of th e past four yea rs, th e lanky T exan has started the season in fine fashion , winning th e o pe n ing GP in japan. Laguna Seca has never been kind to Schwanu, th ough , with last year 's hopes of a U.S. GP win dashed in a turn II cra sh. The accident not only ended his chances of beating Rainey at La guna, but he a lso brok e hi s right wrist. Preseason tests showed Ilaws in the Suzuki RGv500 as it had to undergo the most work to make th e new 1991 FIM weight lim it. But those who wrote Schwantz orr prior to th e j apanese GP were quickly proven wrong. Michael Doohan 1990 R esul ts: 3rd in 500cc championship R oth m a n s H onda he heir apparent to Rainey's crown? Many think this 25-year- old Au stra lian is th e man most likely to dethrone the cu rre nt cha m p io n. A fighting second place finish behind Schwantz in th e opening T round of the championship in japan has done little to diminish the enthusiasm of Doohan's fans. Doohan won his first-ever GP in only hi s second GP seaso n last yea r. In addition, he stood on the rostrum five times. The Aussie, like his teammate Wa yne Gardner, will be among only a few of the top rid ers using Michelin rubber in 1991, and many see this as being his best cha nce of toppling Rainey and Schwanu. Wayne Gardner 1990 R esults: 5th in 500cc cham pionship Roth m a ns Honda o r th ose who thought Wayne Gardner was washed up, the final round of the 1990 cha m p io nship in Au stralia was a n eye opener. Gardner fought orr th e cha llenges of Doohan, Rainey and Schwantz to win hi s seco nd strai g h t home GP , after a n inju ry-filled 1990. " G ardner ope ned the 1990 season with a second place fini sh in japan, but he crashed at Laguna Seca a track he has been o pen ly critica l of. H e won in Spain and finished fourth in Italy after br eaking rib s in a practi ce crash, but his season di sintegrated in Germany F 21
