MAR. 8 Defendin s Nationa l Speedway Cham pion Mik e Faria started the 1991 Sou thern Ca li fornia Speedway seaso n 011 with a bang by winnin g the Coon Spring Cassie before a la r g e crowd at the O ra nge Co unty Fa irgr o u nds. . The 16 racers contested 20 prelimi nary heats. The to p lo ur after the heats moved into th e Io ur -lap Coors main even t with th e nex t fou r goi ng in to th e co nsola tio n. Faria a nd 1988 National Champion Steve Lu cero emerged lrom the heats with 13 points each to lead th e field . Next on the list wi th I I points were Billy Hamill and Lance Kin g. Hamill. who will spe nd th e season racing in England, came o ut with seco nd. but th e lan~le used up valuable tim e. He was far behind Faria a nd with o n ly o ne lap to ~o he didn 't have a chance to ca tch th e National Ch ampion.
