The 16 racers contested 20 prelimi nary heats. The to p lo ur after the heats moved into th e Io ur -lap Coors main even t with th e nex t fou r goi ng in to th e co nsola tio n. Faria a nd 1988 National Champion Steve Lu cero emerged lrom the heats with 13 points each to lead th e field . Next on the list wi th I I points were Billy Hamill and Lance Kin g.
