" I got by Radzinski early, and I tried
to stay smooth the whole time," said
Clowers. " I ma de one m ista ke over the
double j ump and almos t cras hed then
I just ca lm ed down , and started
concen trating."

tru cks, bu ggies and AT Vs.
:rhe o ne thing Clowers didn't do was
grab the points lead since the Ultracross format awards Poin ts for finish
positi on and for passing. After o ne
round th e po ints lead er is former
Ultracross Champion Jim Holley,
who fini shed second in the main but
collec ted 14 passing points in his
char ge to the front of the pack .
At the sta rt of heat o ne, defending
Ultracross Champion Mich ael Craig
stor med into th e lead with Lowell
Thomson and Ryan Carlisle following. Craig was th e first rid er 10 clear
the big double j u mp, and the crowd
was on its feet as the ot her riders
att empted 10 mak e it. As Craig, Thomson and Carlis le began to spread ou t,
Tracy Monterone and Chad Pederson
sta rted a bailie that would last a ll mot o
long. At the checkered flag it was Craig
taking the win over T homson, Carlisle, Monterone an d Pederson.
Larry Brooks grabbed the holesho t
in heat two over Chris Radzinski.,
whi le Holley q ui ckl y disp laced Je ff
Fine for lhird. Brooks stretc hed out a
big lead in th e early going, and began
wicking his bike sideways over the big
doubl e jum p , much to th e delight o f
the mor e tha n 50,000 fans .
Another rider who was on the move
was Kawasaki's P hil Lawrence. La wrence started mid -pa ck and storm ed pas t
Kyle Lewis an d Holley to claim second
at the checkered flag beh ind Brooks.
" It went prell y easy, I go t a good
star t, and I though l I' d get the people
p um ped, and have a lillie fun over the
do uble," said Broo ks.
The to p I0 rid ers of each heat race
transferr ed 10 th e 20-man main event,
and it was Radzinski with th e holeshot
foll owed by Clowers, J oe Waddington '
and Kyle Lewis. Clowers immediatel y
took comma nd as Radzinski began
dropping back to an event ual 18thplace fin ish. Brooks, Craig and Holley
all started at the back of the pack and
began working their way up .
At the halfway point Waddington
was beginning to pressure Clowers, as
Holley moved into th ird follo wed by
Lewis and Brooks. Yellow flags came
out as Kevin Geyer crashed hard over
the double j ump, and with the ambulance crews out o n the track, no one
else attempted to clear th e jump. As
the wh ite flag came o u t, Waddington
tried an all-or-nothing pass o n Clowers that caused him to crash hard,
giving second place to Holley, who
had fallen off the pace.
