Springer wasted little time and displaced Sp ine lli before the st'Co lap began, but al so nd o n th e m o ve from mid·pa ck was Gary Songstad a nd Tony Mason . Song stad started in eig h th wit h Mason on ly inches beh ind as both riders found their way throug h traffi c. By mid .m oto, Miller had ope ned up a comlorta ble lead over a ha rd-charging Springer wh ile th e So ngstad· Mason steam-roller had mo ved into the number th n -e a nd fou r slots. Up front Miller too k the checkered followed by Springer, Son gstad , Mason a nd Arella no rounded o u t th e top five. . Mota two saw Mill er wi th the holcsh o t aga i n but a l mos t threw it away a s he enco u n tered th e firs t turn with a lillIe too mu ch speed. He backed off the th rottle a hair a nd hung on to take the lead with the pac k breathing down his neck. Spri nger started bell er th is time and was not abo u t to let th e Suzu ki rid er ge t away. Ma son was ho lding down th ird bu t was dropped back by Son gstad as they came down the lun g stra igh tway. Miller took his second win lor the day and hi s first Nov ice class o vera ll wi n wi th Sp ringer capt uring second overall. Son gstad too k hom e thud a nd a four wa y tie for fourth went to Spinelli as Arell ano rounded o u t the top five with a pair of fifth s for the day. Another classic ballie was witnessed in th e Vet Int ermediate class as Mike Roch ester and Ch arli e Strong pu shed a nd shoved the ir way back and forth in second and third beh ind GeorRe Wall ace. Wall ace smoked to a pa ir o f mota win s leavin g second to be fou ghl over between Roch ester. Strong and J ere Mason . Mason edged out strong for third in moto on e. but Rot caug h t behind a mote-long du el between Rochester and Strong in moto two. Following Walla ce across the checkered was Rochester with Strong hanging onto his sh irttail. Winkler fin ished in second with T h ru ne close beh ind in th ird. T hru ne work ed hard to win the second moto. T hrune go t the holeshot , but Cliff Eckes ran on hi s rear wh eel the entire race. Chuck Graves con tinued his win streak from last season in the Miller High-Life Formula On e Grand Prix race as he set out to retain his F-I titl e for a second consecutive year. Graves wasted no time taking the lead on his Michelin-shod, Mit ch Leonard-tuned Suzuki GSXRJlOO. with Jamie James in second a nd Brad Hazen in third. James lost second place wh en he ran off the tra ck in turn thr ee on lap two. Although he recovered and co n tin ued In th e race, he was now at the back. of the pa ck. T his gave Graves a considerable lead over H azen . The maj or battl e of the race began to develop for third p lace. In the early stages Robert Mill er was running third, but he soon had co mpe titio n from Barry Burk e. still recovering from a foot injury. Soo n to jo in the fray for third place were Yamaha TZ250 riders Nick lenatsch a nd Michael Grav es. Chuck's brother.
