Da ve Coupe pulled a huge holeshot in the opening Vet Pro rnoto aboard his Senco Fastening Systems/Sinisalo/ FMF -backed Honda. wi th J im Ellis, Pete Murray and Rex Staten .in tow. Coupe set an incredi ble pace and by lap th ree had esta bl ished a five-seco nd lead over Ell is. wh o was busy fighting off the charges of Murray and Staten . Staten went down o n lap four, but remounted quickl y a nd began 10 work back towards th e front of the pack. Ron Turner emerged out of the pack to challen ge Murray for third, forcing his way past a tum. Next to fall victim 10 Turner's charge was Ellis as he was passed on a rough , sandy straight. Coupe took an easy win o ver Turner , Ellis and Staten , who had stuffed Murray o n the last lap to take fourth place. " I grabbed the hol esho t and felt really good," said a ha ppy Co upe. "I'm comfortable ri ding in th e sand, but I felt awkwa rd in the hard p ack ed sectio ns. I was wa tch ing for Staten , bu t he never came alo ng." Coupe stol e a no ther hoelshot in the secon d go around, with Ellis, Murray and Ga ry Semics in tow. Staten bullied his way into third o n th e start of lap two , but cra shed o ut of co nte ntion a few turns later. Meanwhile, Coupe du p licated hi s first mo to di sappearing act, leaving Ell is a nd Semics to argue over the runner-up position. Ellis held o nto seco nd at the finish ahead of Sem ics a nd Mu rra y. " I just tried to ri de smooth and conserve energy in case I ha d to fight off Rex la te in the rnoto , but I guess he went down ," said Coupe. Sean Pagel ripped off the line in the first 250cc Intermediate rnoto, with Juan Moraly, Tyler Hummel and Rob Drew shadowing him. As Pagel began to pull away from the field, Drew bounced past Hummel in a series of whoops and sn uck under Moraly in a tight comer. Drew did all he co ul d 10 gain o n Pagel , but th e Pro Circuit rider was lo ng gone. Third went to Hummel who got past Mora ly in the far section of the course. Pa gel picked u p where he left off in th e first moto, and grabbed the early lead in rnoto two, while Drew a nd Hummel argued over the runner-up position. The two stayed wi th in inche s .. of each other throughout th e mot o, but it was Hummel who nabbed seco nd. Pa gel took th e o vera ll win while Hu m mel' s 3-2 fin sihes ed ged out Drew's 2-3 score, Mike Scott dominated both rnotos in the Up The Hill Junior class, leadi ng both races from the early laps. Fred Hommel finished in the second pos ition in moto one just ahead of Ni ck Atha ns and Joe Bond, who had originally grabbed a h uge holeshot . Mot o two was another Scott show, with Athans ba rely edging out Bond for th e second place spot. Scott was unbeatabl e for the overall win, while Athans and Bond finished second a nd third overa ll , respectively. Jason Caulfield took the first mo to win in the 125cc Begin ner moto jus t ahead of a charging Char les Gonza lez - and Jerem y G iroir . Caulfield backed up hi s first mo lO performance wi th another win in mo to two , th is time ahead of Gary Shoemak er a nd A.J. Winner Sean Pagel (l8P) roo sted to the front of the pack in the 250cc Intermediate Division One class. Lamb. Ca ulfield took the overall win, Sh oemaker was seco nd, an d Lamb earned th ird overall. Daniel Blair dominated the Pee Wee Stock class by tak in g two convincing mot o win s over Michael Blose.
