v Letters 0ICES to the editor Now is the time I am a 47-year-old MBA running a pri vate advertising/marketing company, a life member of the AMA, a member of· H.O.G . and th e Vincent Owners Club , and a 30-year responsible rider. I object strenuously to being referred to as "a maverick group of off-road en th u sia sts" because I beli eve in multiple use of public lands and there fore am also a memb er of (cha rter) th e Phantom Duck Club a n d th e Sahara Club. ,J Now is the tim e, not only for all mo tor cyclists (off-road or hi ghway) bu t for all people concern ed with less int ru sive government to write, call, knock on the door, or picket their local , state and federal government to save the environment by: A. En couraging the use of motorcycles because of lower smog, smaller size (less congestion and parking), and better gas mile age. J B. Stop military and real est te development in "sensitive" areas. o C. En courage all people who enjoy the " boo n ies" to do so, with areas set · aside for different types of use. / . Steve Kramer Pr.ospect Heights, IL .,c! l be Proud mother l I must tell you how excited we all were to see our son, Lee Pounders, on the front page of Cycle News , and th e very nice write-up by Henny Ray Abrams. Thanks so much. Our family has had a new lease on life since we have been road racing. We've met so many wonderful people - great young men , and we can 't wait for the next race. Lee knows things will be different next year , but that's okay . Lik e he says, it's all a learning experience. I enjoy Cycle New s as we have met so many of these young riders and have many mem ories in p hotos and on tape. I sit on my patio and relive th e races with a cu p of tea. Thanks once again. Bets Pounders Orlando, FL L ee Pounders wo n a record four Nov ice class Nat ional Cham p ionshi ps at the recent Dayton a Race of Champions. Although he's 32, Pounders d idn 't start ro ad racin g until 1989 . .. Editor. We don't need no tourin g bike he tried to hide his real name: Robert Van Winkle." Well , there's his real name. Did he really used to race? If so, where? H e also claimed he wo n th e cham pion ships as a T eam Ho nda me mber. H onda has no record of Van Wir.kle riding for th em . Other reports say Van Winkle is from Te xas and perhap s he wo n races that were run in th e Sou thwest and spon sored by Kawasak i. W e've . spent a lot of time go ing through back issues and have yet to fin d his nam e. Is there anyone in T exa s who rem embers a R o bert Van W inkle racing there? .. . Editor . This is in response to the "Threatened species" lett er from Perry Lang that appeared in the Novemb er 28 issu e: Lang may hav e som e val id points about the sport of dirt track racing losing tracks and promoters in California over the last I0 years, but he is very misinformed about AMA dirt tra ck racing in California during 1990, and the prospects for AMA racin g in 1991 . The real facts are that Lodi Cycle Bowl is not the only place left in Californ ia to go AMA dirt track racing. Bakersfield Speedway in Bakersfield, California, has been hosting AMA semi-professional short track and TT races throughout the 1990 season. The promoter, Bob Van Demeyer, deserves a lot of credit and support for taking the chance and pu tting on the ra ces. T he Bakersfield Racing Associaaon has a fant asti c crew, a great race track, and will usually have around 150 participants in th e "sem i-pro and am ateur classes. Art Barda , AMA dirt track manager, and the Bakersfield promoter have had serio us di scussions regardin g th e running of 600 Nat ionals at the track in 1991. T here are a lot of racers in thi s part of California that want to see this effort succeed. Also, I wou ld like to be sure that everyone interested in dirt track racing knows tha t we have a beautiful oneeig hth mil e short track in Carl sbad tha t runs year-rou nd: T o contact the Baker sfield Racers Association abou t AMA races, call 805/ 323-7877.
