By t he end of lap two, Russell and Brown were racin g o ut front with P]ess in~er third. O 'N ail had lost two min ut es o n the fIrSt lap and he a nd teammat e Tim Shephard faced an uphi ll battle to ma ke up th e lost tim e. The tWO leading team s were swa p ping th e lead back and forth with the largest lead bei ng abo u t 20 seconds going into th e fin al tWOlaps. As the race wo und down, stra tegy and lu ck came into play. With two laps to go, Russell had opened up a 33 seco nd lead over Roach. Brown took over [or Roa ch . whi le Russell elected to fin ish for th e Russell /Cun ningham team . A rested Brown had narro wed. Ru ssell 's lead to 15 seco nds by th e sta rt of th e last lap , setting th e stage for a race to the checkered £lag.
