As the race wo und down, stra tegy and lu ck came into play. With two laps to go, Russell had opened up a 33 seco nd lead over Roach. Brown took over [or Roa ch . whi le Russell elected to fin ish for th e Russell /Cun ningham team . A rested Brown had narro wed. Ru ssell 's lead to 15 seco nds by th e sta rt of th e last lap , setting th e stage for a race to the checkered £lag.
