Was this practice open to all National entrants? If not , is th at fair? If so, is it unfair du e to the fact th at man y non factory riders do not have the resources to mi ss wor k hour s or handle the extra expense of being on the road for a few addit iona l days? What is th e AMA's policy, what is yo u r o pi n io n, and how were th e practice sessions arranged? Cody Jenkins Buffalo, NY Accord ing to R oy Janson , who's in ch arg e of AMA . p rofession al MX racing, Dunlop renl ed th e Unadi lla Irack on the T hursday prior to the Nat iona l. The A M A on ly req uires promoters of N ationa l even ts to clear use of th e track that will tak e pla ce 21 hours prior to a Nat ional, i.e. th e . day befo re an even t, and requ ires th at / th e promoter be able to perform prop er Irack mainlenance prior to a Na tio nal. Janson is adamant in his belief that private practice at a facility do es no t give pro fession al racers an advantage. " T hose gu ys don 't come to a track to learn how 10 race. In m ost cases, th ey have thei r ow n privat e practice tracks. Besides, whatev er ad vantage they cou ld ha v e gain ed by riding at Unadilla on Thursday didn't m ean a th in g on Sunday because of the rain that fell Saturday and Saturday night and com p letely chan ged th e track ," Janson said. Our opi n ion ? Factoryback ed riders always have an advantage over riders who eit her hold down regular jobs or have lim ited resources. An extra practi ce day isn't go ing to change a th ing . . . Nigel Gale Bartels ' Racing/Bartels H-D Culver City, CA T ext er wo n both the race and the series title in th e U.S. T w in Spor t class at the AMA /CCS Ra ce of Cham pions at Daytona. Gale, th e 1989 Tw in Sp orts seco n d at cha m p , f in ish ed Daytona . . . Ed itor, Deluxe souvenir Whi le I attended the Indy Mile in August, I man aged to get into the pits to ta lk to some of th e racers I raced wit h a few years.back (10 years ago). I had asked Ronnie J on es for one of his numb er plat es last year, bu t was unable to ge t in to uc h wit h him first ha nd until th is year. Well, I finally got wha t I want ed, an au togra p hed Ron ni e Jones #16 number plat e. After getting the p lat e I .had some of the other r~cers sign the back as a first class sou vem r. Congratu lations on a super season , Ron n ie, a nd th anks a lot for the number pl ate. My Dad and I have it in our bar ber sho p here in Anderson , It means a lot to me. Burke com peted as Expert decade ago . . . Editor. Skin deep I have atten ded th e six most impor tant antiq ue mo torcycle sh ows i California. I have found, mu ch to m dismay , that no differentiation exist between "sh ow" bikes and tho s restored to origina l facto ry condi tions no rules, no specifications, no point sheets and no guidan ce for either th pa rticipants or th e judges as to wha , is expected. Sometimes, dep ending on wh o ' j udgi ng, chro me and glossy pain t win. At o ther times, over ly-res tore mach ines win. And occasionally tru restora tio ns are taken into considera tio n. I am neither for nor agai nst 'an of these. Rather, I feel it is essential, in order to ens ure the fu ture participa tio n in , and growth of, these events, th at th e organi zers clearly iden tify, th classificat io ns (i .e . show, factory restoration, creative restora tio n. etc.) in to wh ich th e mach ines may b ente red and th e specific criteria by whi ch each category will be judged. Fur thermore, it would be of tremendo us val ue if th ey co u ld ge t th is information out to the public prior to th e even t as this would eliminate a lot of wasted tim e and mon ey for th ose participants wh o find themselves with an antique motorcycle and no category in whi ch it may compete. A pair of heroes I am writin g th is letter not as an exec u tive ..for a major motorcycle company, but as a motocross fan. I wou ld like to compliment Mike Kiedrowski on th e honorable and professional manner in which he has handled himself thi s season. Mike did not have the best season of h is career, but he always ga ve it hi s best, and never publicly whined or comp la ined wh en things didn't go hi s way. And, despi te th e " Ro llerball " tactics of some other riders, Mike a lways rode clean and fair (at least in the races that I witnessed, wh ich was a large percentage). • When Mike lost the 125cc MX Nati on al Ch ampion shi p to Suzuki's Guy Cooper by a single point, he righ tly said that Cooper "deserved it (the titl e)." Mike won 't be carrying # I plate next season, but he's got the right stuff to earn many championsh ips in what we all hope will be a IJ long racing career. And what of Guy Coo per? H e's ano ther hero I Coop er battl ed hi s' way from ob scurity to a Nation al Ch ampionship at 28 years of age in a young man 's sport. H e crashed in both mo fos (as well as severa l hundred times during' the seaso n) of th e final and always go t up to come back and win. H e also has been a clean rid er this season and deserves all of the rewardS that th e #1 pla te is going to bring h im. a , I Joe Colombero Press Relations Manager American Suzuki Motor Corp.
