in '91. "We're very anxious to do well," Erio n said. "I do n't think there will be two Honda teams in 1992, and we're hop ing to be the one." What about Freddie Spencer ? "Freddie wants to race at Daytona in March, but we don't have a budget for Freddie to race," Erion said. "We've told him he has to solicit some sponsorship. If he's still committed, chances are we'll let him ride our bike. If Freddie comes to the table with support, he'll ride one of our bikes at Daytona." Spencer raced four times in 1991 on the Two Brothers Racing RC30. As of November 4, road racer Jamie James had no defin ite raci ng plans for 1991. The Fast By Ferracci Ducati rider says thi ngs are still up in the air regarding the '91 season. James, who rode in several Wor ld Superbike events in addition to the AMA Superbike Series this year, says he would like to ' stay stateside in '91 if the right support were available. Vance & Hines Yamaha's Thomas Stevens is currently traini ng to compete in an upcoming marathon in his homestate of Florida. If all goes well, Stevens hopes to qualify for the 1991 Boston Marathon which takes place on March II, the day after the Daytona 200. AMA Superbike National Champion Doug Chandler is expected to make a decision regarding his 1991 racing plans in the next few weeks. Chandler's choices ·reportedly include a 500cc Grand Prix ride with Lucky Strike Suzuki and a World Superbike ride with Kawasaki. Stay tuned. R.j. Reynolds, sponsor of the Camel Supercross Series with their Camel cigarette bra nd, announced at the November 3 AMA Pro Awards Banq uet at Newport Beach, California, tha t the 1991 Camel Supercross Championship wi ll be worth $100,000 to the series champ, an increase of $50,000. That matches the amount given to the Camel Pro Series Dirt Track champ. The Coors Brewin g Co. will continue its support of the Supe rcro ss Series in '91 with the Coors Light brand. Each event will likely be called the Silver Bull et Challenge. Fonner Supercross and 125cc National champ Johnny O 'Mara said at the AMA Pro Awards Banquet that he plans to compete in the January 26 Anaheim Supercross then retire from motorcycle racing. O'Mara will then switch to racing bicycles. Former Supercross and National MX Champion David Bailey won the first wheelchair race he competed in on November 3 in San Diego, California. Bailey, who was paralyzed in a practice crash in 1987, completed the 10-kilometer race in 29 minutes, 41 seconds. "The last 50 yards was grassy and bumpy, which made me feel right at home," said Bailey. Lawson imnressive in Cagiva test o ur-time World Champion Eddie Lawson was impressive in his recent Cagiva test session in Rijeka, Yugoslavia. The . Californian's best la p on the Italian V-four was a 1:29.28,a time that would have qualified him third for the 1990Yugoslavian GP and would have given him the second fastest lap of the race, only tenths slower than Wayne Rainey's fastest lap in the GP. Lawson's racing plans for 1991 are still unknown, although many expect him to return to Team Marlboro Roberts for a second season. Lawson's recent trip to Europe also included a visit to the Ferrari factory where he reportedly ordered a new F-40. F Fabian Cortez picked up a $15,000 check from Cagiva North America at the AMA Pro Awards Banquet. The road racer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earned the contingency check by winning the AMA Pro Twins GP2 championship aboard a Fast By Ferracci Ducati. Mike Smith (Suz) clinched the WE RA Fo rmula USA Road Race Series title with a win at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, November I. Smi th's victory came in Thursday's race whic h was held as a makeu p race for the rai ned-out October 7 Indy . ro und. Suzuki GSXR I IOO-mou nt ed Smith topped Robbie Petersen, who was aboard a Team Marlboro Roberts Yamaha YZRSoo V-four, and Tom Kipp (Yam) in the race. Petersen went on to win the final round of the series at Road Atlanta on November 4, beating Scott Russell (Kaw) and defending series champion Kurt Hall (Suz). Smith was knocked down at the start of the final round and DNF. last year attracted more than 7000 riders, benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. -Last year's Love Ride raised over $500,000 for the MDA. The loo-mile ride starts at HarleyDavidson of G lendale (California) and ends at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu Canyon where entertainment will be provided by the likes of Crosby, Eric Burdon and Robbie Krieger. For more information, call 818/246-5618. Rick Johnson will lead a contingent of 28 American motocrossers who will compete in two supercross races in Barcelona, Spain, November 9-10. Included in the group in addition to Johnson are fellow former National Champions Broc Glover, Johnny O 'Mara, Micky Dymond, Mike Kiedrowski and Ron Lechien. The two races will take place in the 17,500seat Pa lau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. The event is being promoted by Solo Moto, the Spanish weekly motorcycle magazine, and sponsored by Chesterfield cigarettes. Leadi ng the European contingent of riders is form er 125cc MX Wor ld Champion Dave Strijbos of Holland. He'll be joined by the likes of fellow countryma n Pedro Tragter and British Champion Rob Herring. Team Suzuki Endurance (Suz ) won the final round of the WERA Kerker/SBS National Endurance Series Championship at Road Atlanta on November 3. Team Suzuki topped The Human Ra ce Team (Ya m) and Boulder Yamaha Racing (Yam ) in the six-hour event. Team Suzuki had already assured itself of the championship prior to Road Atlanta. Tommy Lynch (Suz) and Kurt Hall (Suz) emerged fro m th e Suzuki National Cup Finals at Road Atla nta on November 4 wi th wins in the 750 and l lOO fina ls, respectively. Lynch cc topped Kurt Ha ll and Rick Kirk in the all-Suzu ki 750cc final whi le Ha ll did li kewise to Mike Smith and Britt Turkington in the llOOcc final. Smith had ear lier won the 750cc final, but was disqualified for usi ng a 1989 cams haft in his 1990 GSXR750. EXPANDED: Donny Emler's FMF Racing of Harbor City, California, has tripled the size of its manufacturing, warehouse, shipping and office facilities. According to Glen Thomas, FMF's national sales manager, the expansion will allow for greater inventory and faster shipping, as well as increased production capability for its line of two-stroke highperformance products. NAMED: Jack Roth as president of Road Atlanta, the Georgia road race facility. Roth replaces Ardy Arani who has sold all of his stock in the company to his partner Charles Sheron, chairman and CEO of Road Atlanta. " Road Atlanta has become a world-class roa d racing and ente rtainment facil ity due to Aran i's leadership," Sheron said. "However, due to outside busin ess com mitments , he is no longer able to devote the same amount of time to Road Atlanta." Since 1988, Roth has served as vice president for Roa d Atlanta, ha ndling the track's daily operations. Roth is also president of Road Atla nta Technology Park, a 400acre mixed-use commercial/industrial park aimed at automotive and motorsports firms .
