Schwartz won Ihe event despite losing a
fourth round hea t to ri val Steve L ucero.
Lucero, who was th e reigning Track Cham ·
p ion co m ing into the event, had a perfect score
after defeatin g Sch wa rtz in th at race and
looked lik e a lock to win his seco nd straig h t
final . but he experie nced mecha nica l problems in his fina l ride a nd had to push his
bik e across th e finish line to get the o ne point
tha t is awa rded fo r a th ird-place finish. T ha t
left the door wide open for Schwaru, who o n ly
