At th e co ncl us io n of the first lap Sco n held the lead over Niemi , Mark Rob inson a n d Don Bo nn icksen . Sco tt stre tched h is lead o ut o ver the next lap, whi le Robinso n and Bonnickson engaged in a duel a nd pa ssed N iemi ar o und the fi rst tu rn sweepe r o n th e next lap. Bonnickson man aged to power his Suzuki pa st Rob in son 's Suzuki o n th e next lap in th e sa me p lace while their pace brought th em closer to Scou, Bonnickson moved into the lead after pulling alongside Scott o n a series of ju mps but Sco n didn' t give u p a fter the pass. Going into the sandy back portion of the track o n the las t lap, he passed Bonnickson bac k 10 rake the wi n . Robi nson held o n for third ove r Niemi. There would be no rematch in th e second moto, Ear ly in th e day the track was in prim e cond itio n wit h only a small amount of rain [rom the th rea teni ng skies leavi ng it tacky for the firs t few mo tos. Dav id Niemi sta yed fairly d ose to Engstrom for several la ps whi le they both pulled away from Chad Winecke. Engstrom kept charging and bui lt a good lead in the la ter la ps as N iemi slowed sli gh tly. Steve Go rdon contin ued h is winning wa ys in the Novice cla ss by co mp letely dominating th e first mow from th e drop of the ga te 10 th e checkered flag . TI,e rea l race was for second place betw een Dave Wetherford and Carlos Mari n. The lWO riders bat tled througho ut the race with ~Iarin finally sli pp ing into second o n th e seventh lap. Wetherford stayed close fo r third o ver David Neal. The second moto also belon ged to Cordo n as he went th e en tire di stance uncontested . Marin held down second for IW laps befor e O Weth erford came cha rgi ng past after a six thplace stan. Weth erford didn 't want to bailie with Mar in again and {lulled aw ay to secure th e runner-u p po siti on in the £inal standings. Mar in held o n for third in front of Neal and Bill Shultz.
