Each cla ss had two series points leaders, o ne fro m th e north. and one fro m the south but by the end of the weekend there wou ld be only one cha mpio n for each class. In th e popular 125 and 250cc P ro classes. Jon Nelson swep t both ti ties. dominating a lmos t every mot a in which he competed. Mike Ch amberlain had th e best shot at takin g a titl e away for Nelson. but . had an offweekend. . In Saturday's 125cc Pro con flict. Nelson got th ings rolling by ripping . ou t of the gate ahead of Scott McElroy. Brian R o th . a n d Chamberla in . Although th e HSY I Ma xi ma/ Fo xl Shoei /Pro Circuit/ Rentha l-backed Nelson set a blazing pa ce, McElroy scoo ted underneath hi m o n th e second lap . Once o ut front, McElroy built a small lead over Nelson, wh o was fighting off th e advances of Roth. Nelson swooped pa st McElroy on the back section of th e track. taking the mota win ah ead of McE lro y, Roth and Chamberlain. Seco nd moto action saw Ch amberlain storm o u t of th e gate ahead of McElroy, Roth and Pat Comm. Nelson suffered a sixth place start, but was quickl y slicing his way th rough th e field. Roth slid out on th e first lap and retired whi le Eddi e Hi cks pr essured McElroy for second. On lap three , Nelson misj udged a fast double jump while making a bid for third, and went down hard. Ch amberlain stayed out front with no threats while H icks mad e repeated attempts to displace McElroy. Hicks eventually found his way past. but had no chance of catching Chamberlain, who took the overall win with hi s 4I score . " I was working towards the front , bu t I went down on the do ub le and h urt my hand." explained Nelson. " I got up and got goi ng again, but I cras he d over th e same j um p two laps later' " Nelson later learned that he had cracked a bone in his h an d, but continued to compete. W 22 Shawn Wynne led the 250cc Pro class at the start of moto o ne wit h Roth, Nelson and McElro y close beh ind. Ch amberlain wen t down o n the open ing lap and dropped towards the back of the pack. Roth stormed into the lead on la p three. bu t was overtaken by a charging Nelso n on lap four . Once in front , Nelson opened up a commandin g lead and too k the moto win. Rot h , Wynne and McE lro y trail ed across the finish line. . Dan Pal adino took the early lead in the second mota. with Ch amberlain. Ro th , and Nelson in hot pursuit. Ch amberlain passed Palad ino on lap three and opened up a comma nding lead . Nelson sliced through the field , overtook Pal ad in o and set after Ch amberlain. Although he gained quite a bit o f ground , time ran o u t a n d Chamberlain took the win . . Pete Murray pulled th e holeshot in Sunday's ope n ing 250cc Pro mota. with Nelson, Chamberlain and Larry Co leman in to w. Nel son q u ick ly motored into th e lead with Ch amberlain sh adowing him. Ch amberlain knocked on Nelson's door over and over, bu t the Suzuki rider was unstoppable. Nel son took the win ahea d of Chamberlain and Pal adino. Mu rray a lso ho lesho t the second mota. with Nels on, Ron Allen, and Chamberlain clawing at h is jersey. Nelon 'slip ped under Murray on the second lap, while Cha mberla in lost co ntro l an d went down. Nelson pulled ou t to a co m mandin g lead. whi le Murray and Allen fou ght tooth-andnail over the runner-up position. SEPT. 16 acto ry Suzuki star Buddy Antunez and privateer Erik Kehoe bashed it o u t in all four mo tos of both 125 and 250cc Pro classes with Antunez winning th e 250cc class an d Kehoe coming away with the I25cc class win a t Perr is Raceway. Chris Radzinski p ut hi s KT M in front at the start of th e first 250cc,Pro moto, but Antunez railed past Radzinski as did Kehoe on the opening lap. Antunez put two seconds on Kehoe whi le Radzinski had Micky Dymond all over him in the third spot. Radzinski finall y gave in to the pres sure from Dymond and settl ed into fourth . Antunez maintai ned a safe ma rgin over Kehoe and Dymo nd to the finish. Radzinski again got the holesho t in th e second moto as Kehoe and Antunez both cras hed in th e first turn while Dymond got a wa y third .
