SEPT. 2 Joe Phelps (27) and Duane Stanick (90) stalk winner Ken McConnell in the P ro-Am class at 1-96 Short Track in Michigan. Phelps took second. Doug Stephens (942) won the Vintage and 250cc Amateur class at Royal Mtn. (Kaw); 3. Johnny Cipollina (Sur): 4. Todd Koehne was Gary Ackroyd, while o n th e SO wa s ' Bowers. Charlie Ven ega s. Brent Wern er a nd Chris Man ch ester , and Steve Lucero, O xley and Mike Faria were back o n th e 50. T he ta pe s new u p a nd the eight riders o n the du st y, Iittle raw-desert trac k were off in a sta mpede of how lin g rubber and stee l. T he tapes had to go up four times before the six -lap race co uld be co mp leted. Every rider was down at som e point, with most of them, su ch as Ackroyd and Venega s going d own mu ltiple tim es. After th e fina l restart, Manchester found himself in front of the pack a nd cruising along with a comfona lbe lead . If only he co u ld just ho ld o n befor e either L ucero or the track got h im . . . and he did, ca rry ing th e chec kered na g arou nd th e track on his victory lap at what must undoubtedly had been the most difficuh win of hi s young career.
