spi te of being out of the saddle for a few years. In the first race of the ro und -two, Maurer had the best view as Randy Gutshall an d J eff Tretera, who arrived la te and missed both practice sessio ns, tussled for the three points that go to a winner. Gutshall came out on top with a two-race total of five po ints. Round two, hea t two saw Cornell , Hod ges and Pa t Reyno lds hopin g to ga ther poin ts early in the meeting so they wou ld have a sho t at the main event, but thei r hopes on ly lasted until the tapes were released. Diem finis hed his four-lap ro u te by ta kin g the checkered flag ahead of Cornell , Reynolds, and Hod ges. The third heat saw yet another runaway win by Da ily, with Matthewson drifting high in turn three, giving Racin a gift second place and the acco mpa nyi ng two points. By the third rou nd, the question was who woul d fill the two remai ni ng spots in th e final as Daily and Diem look ed u nbeatable, and Gu tshall and Corne ll trailed with five points apiece. Race one of round three was a classi c as the four riders put on one of the best individual races of th e night . Reyn ol ds, wh o 'd driven in from Ken tu ck y th e ni ght bef ore to partici pa te in an exh ibition for th e Pro Foo tball Ha ll of Fa me Festival, was in contention for first p lace unti l he hooked up exi ting tu rn four . When he recovered from what could have been a nas ty meetin g wit h th e fence, Heral a was righ t undern eath, looking for every point he coul d get . Daily was victorious wi th Cornell a very close sec o nd a n d Reyn olds th ird after moving up on Herala, leaving h im no roo m to make a run for third place. Round th ree, race two saw Gutshall win with T re tera trail ing beh in d. Matthewson and Maurer placed third and fourth, respect ively. Race three saw contras ting styles with Racin , a speedway rider from the late '70s, an d H odges, a former ProAm dirt tra cker w h o turned to speedway , linin g up at th e tapes. Racin 's q u icker reaction time got him out of the tra ps first, but Diem 's mo tor po wered h im past Racin by the first cor ner. Unless somethi ng unexpected happen ed, it appeared that Diem a nd Dail y wou ld advance to th e fin al from the fourth round. The first race saw Diem in ga te two with nin e poin ts, Gutshall in the now-improved ga te on e with eigh t points, Racin in ga te four wi th six points and Reynolds in gate three wi th three points. It seemed as if Diem could read the starter 's mind as he got a huge jump o n the rest o f the field. Local riders Gutshall and Ra ci n battled back and forth , with Ra cin knowing this was his last chance to advance and Gutshall not willing to give up that extra point to anybody. Racin nipped Gutshall by less than a half bike-length. For the last two heats of the night, Racin was the keenest spectator in the stands as the ot her riders wou ld decide his fate. Racin 's wait was made longer when Jeff Tretera's machine wouldn 't fire and he was excluded for exceeding the allowable two minutes. Cornell needed at least one point to force a runoff between Racin and himself, and he started poorly by getting a weak jump from the gate, giving Herala th e lead for the first circuit. Entering turn two, Cornell switched to a higher lin e and pow ered pa st, shutting the doo r on Heral a ent ering tum three. Cornell went on to win , ending Racin 's hopes of a slot in the final, with Her al a fin ishing second a nd Maurer bringing up th e rear of th e three-ma n field.
