Dave Gaul San Diego, CA Immune from criticism? I am tired of people saying th at because Freddie Spencer was a double Wo rl d Champion . h e shou ld be immune from' criticism. No one is in any way demeaning hi s accomp lishments; they speak for themselves. What people are saying is that hi s behav ior when he says he will race is unaccep· table. Showing up overw eight, out of shape. and not read y to race is not excused by his former standing. H e is letting down fans and failing to meet professional obligations to his sponsors and bike supp lier. What would ha ppen to any other racer if he pulled the same stunts tha t Spencer has ? We had discussed purchasin g a new helmet for my wife on the rid e to Springfield; her old helmet wasn 't very comfortable and she needed a helmet with a visor th at would open easily and stay put. We bought six raffle tickets for $5 and were the holders of one of the first 10 tickets called. The 10 of us had first choice of all the raffle items displayed and my wife chose a Bell helmet. Thanks, IMDA. We would also like to thank R.j. Reynolds and everyone else involved in making the Camel Pro Series dirt track events such a great and enjoyable time , and hope that they go on for man y more years to com e. Come to think of it I am of the opinion that what th Barst ow-to -Vega s ra ce needs is a corpora te spon sor . Maybe 'a major S&L. That way our dear California Senator Cranston would surely back it. RIP, Roxy I was stu nned by th e phone call from Cal ifornia. Roxy had left us. I honestly can 't say when or where we first met. It was at a motorcycle race, that I do know. It seems like I've known him forever. We talked on the phone not long ago . mainly about his business an d his life away from th e race tracks. We were going to meet at Ascot the end of this month. Hi s " swan song," he called it. I planned to fly acro ss the country, largely to hear Rox y in action one more time. Now it won 't happen. so I' ve made ot her p lans for tha t weekend. I remember ho w I used to look forward to Daytona each year, with Roxy and th e Webco rad io show at the Hawai ian Inn a highlight of my Speed Week. Roxy would call me early, reminding me to make my hotel reservation, "and be sure to stay at Hawaiian Inn." Then Bob Hughes and Tom Heininger shut Webco down . and "T he Roxy Rockwood Show" wasn 't quite the same: Then one year the radio show was gone, and for me Daytona wasn 't quite the sam e. We never took that ride through the desert and down into Baja , old buddy. Maybe in another wor ld. Rest in peace. Sinclair is th e chairman and CEO of Saab Cars USA, Inc. . . . Editor.
