Bolas hops at PIR Motocross By Dan Meeker PORluND, OR, AUG. 2.\ An im pressive performance by Mike's Suzu kibacked T im H olas resulted in a pa ir of moto wins an d an overa ll victory in the Min i J u nio r class at Portlan d International Race way, Ernie Gendro n led the way as the ga te dropped for the firs t mo to , bu t Holas was in hot pursui t follo wed by Rick Steiner, Gendron a nd Holas developed a quick lead on the eight o ther ri de rs as they im mediately began battling for the top position. Holas actually passed Gendron on a section of jumps along the back stra igh t of the track , bu t, before the two ri ders ha d reac he d th e en d of th a t straighta way, Gendron had repas sed to retake the lead, The battle con tin ued until, with four liips remainin g, H olas cleared a set of small double jumps and took over the lead for good. As Holas bu ilt a cushion between himself and . G endron, so me ser ious ac tio n was develo pi ng beh ind them as Kory Rasmussen was' on the move after begi nni ng mota six. In one lap Rasmussen managed to pass Kevin Eaki n, Joshua Bruce and Stein er. Before the moto ended, Gendron had fought hi s way back in to fighting distance of H ol a s, but was unable to get by. The moto ended with Holas, Ge ndron and Rasmussen leading the way, Gendron repeated hi s lirs t moto holesho t in mota two and once agai it was Halas hot on his heel s. Gendron and H olas quickl y separated themselves from th e rest of th e pack. Ra smus sen had a much better star t as he go t off ' the line in third behind Holas, but was unable to fini sh any better than eig h th after a secon d lap m ish ap to ok h im o ut of contentio n, On that same lap H olas used the outside lin e of a left-h and comer to get by Gen dron a nd take over the lead. Ed Pearson inherited th ird and rode stro ng to hold down tha t pos itio n an d improve upon hi s sixthplace fini sh in the first moto, H oltgrew repeated hi s fourth pl ace finis h of the first mota. Greer, Snider top LACR Night MX By Tony Alessi PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 24 • Brent Greer and Ray Snider posted four moto victories in divis io n on e and two of the 125cc Beginner classes during the CRC Friday Night Series a t Los Angeles County Raceway. Greer sta rted th ird behind Jord an Lieberma n and Bryan Croft a t th e start of the first 125cc Begin ner division one mota . Lieberman tried ha rd but was no match for Greer. O nce in second Greer dogged Croft up to the final laps. Greer caug h t Croft 011 guard and mad e the pas s for the lead which he held In the checkered nag. Greer ho les hot th e second rnor o a n d powered away , leavin g Croft and Josh Stevens to battl e over second. Lieberma n rode two consistent motos and scored th ird overall behind Croft and Gree r. Sni der came away win ner of the second division of the 125cc Beginner class a fter battling wit h Anthony Bojarano . Boja ra no a nd Snider excha nged the lead in excess 01 10 times during tbe two motes and p ulled far away from the rest of the pack. When the dust settled it was Snider first in both rnotos with Bojarano lollowing wi th a pa ir of ru nner-up finishes. J ason Reed continued hi s assau lt of the 125cc Novice class as he powered by Tony Fer ragamo in both motos. Ferragamo led both races to the late stages before Reed sq uirted by lor the victo ries. Kempel captures wioat Spring Creek Motocross By Rolfe Otterness MILLVIllE, M AUG. 18-1 N, 9 Ja son Kem pe l had a great weekend at the Spring Creek Park mo tocross track , winning the 125cc A class and placin g secon d in the Youth class in Saturday's races. O n Su nday he took firs t place in the special ama teur race hel d in co nj u nc tion wit h the 125/ 500cc Nat ion al MX. The field of compe tito rs for Sunday's race consisted of those riders who placed near the 101' of their cla sses on Saturday 10 the Mini Sr, 125cc You th , Over 25, Vet A and other A classes. The ama teur compe tit ion drew 500 rid ers eager to give it a shot on the top rat ed Spring Creek trac k. J ason G ray burst in to an early lead in the lirst 125cc A moto. T odd Lentz and Mark Norris fell in beh ind bu t Gr ay coul dn 't ma tch .his pace and he went on to lead every lap on hi s KK Motorcycle Supply/ Barr 's Competit io n/Power Mist/Suzuki of L.A.-backed RM . Norri s took Lentz for second nea r the begin ning of the second lap and pulled out a decent margin for five laps wh ile Len tz a nd Kem pel disputed thi rd. Near the end of the race Gray had a 30-second lead over Norris, w ho held a comforta lbe mar gin over Kem pel lor th ird, bu t Norr is went down and lell back to fourth on the last lap. Kempel and Lentz too k second an d third wi th Dan Win istock fil th, Norris swep t into the lead in the second moto and led the first lap over Jack La mbert and Kempe l. He went down once again on th e second lap but recovered in seven tll. Gray was working his .way throug h the pa ck at a rapid ra te afte r a first turn pileu p while Kem pel and Lentz circulated out fron t. By the six th lap Gray had worked his way back to fourth place a nd closed in to take th ird from Lambert. Kempe l an d Len tz were ou t of reach .in the time remaining a nd the nag fell first for Kem pel. Len tz and Gra y were next over Co rey H olcomb , who had displ aced La m bert fro m fourth on the last lap. The You th cl a ss featured so me h a rd charging by Mike Atkinson and Kempel. Atkin son was runnin g stro ng an d led Kem~1 in both mo lOs for the win, Shane Langdale too k a third in th e first mo to, bu t dropped to seven th in the next, Matt Hills DNF the first molO but came back in the second for third. Travis Aho's con sisten t 4-4 day tied up thi rd overall. Duane Kuiken (401) and Jan Vetesurd (55) topped the 250cc and Open A classes, respectively, during combined moto action at Spring Creek MX. In the highly-com pe titive O ver 25 class. Bill Engstrom Jumped ou t early to lead the first lap 01 rno to one but Mark Robinson too k over the lead and went on 10 win . Robert Bergstro m too k second over Jack Lambert and Eng stro m. Robi nson led every lap in the second moto to take th e win. Bergstrom held off Todd Baker lor several laps in second, bu t Baker event ua lly got by. Lambert to o k lourth behind Bergstrom. Sunday's race featured a very ro ugh track due to rai n and the tremendo us ruts and bumps formed by the Nati on al riders, Veteran rider John Volk ra n strong to take the win in the first mo to whi le Brian Deegan took advan tage of a head star t to take second over Kempel , Robinson an d Holcomb . In the second moto, on a track with holes like bom b cra ters gouged in it, Kempe l go t out front and bu ilt a good lead to take the win. McBride sweeps Victory Speedway By Larry McBride VlcrORY, NY, AUG. 18 Lenny McBride took a pair of win s in bo th the Handicap and Scratch ma ins a t Victory Speed way. . McBrid e's sole loss of the event ca me a t the hands of Tim Matheson who edged him ou t by only a bike length in Handicap semi two. In the first even t the Mari o 's Pizza/Fox Accesso ries / Ken Barber Sh op-spo n so re d McBrid e sat alo ngs ide of John Lewis on the 50 yard li ne with the bal an ce _ the field in of Iront on th e shor ter yardage. From the zero yard lin e Kyle Dixon held the lead for four com p lete circu its before relinquishin~ it to Marco Morello. After failing to gam mu ch ground on the inside of the track, McBride switched to the outside to also get by Dixon and closed in on Morell o. Staying to the outsi de McBride just edged out More llo at the fin ish li ne lor the win . The ,Scra tch main was a one-on-one confrontation between McBride an d Lewis, From the pol e pos ition Lewis got the early lead with McBride on hi s rig h t sho u lder. Moural magic at Cydeland 'MX By Michael Rich CHICO, CA, AUG. 24 Honda-mou nt ed Lowe ll Mou ral , J r, used consisten t rid ing and a little luck to come away the overa ll win ner in the combi ned Expert/ Intermediate class a t Ch ico 's Cycleland Speedway on Friday night, When the gate dropped on the first Expert! Intermedia te moto, It was John Stark taking the lead from Lowe ll Mour al, Jr. and Brandon Williams. On the second lap, Will iams went down in the rockers a nd although he was q u ickl y u p , he had to push his broken mach in e back to the pits. Williams' misfortune moved Ri ck Nye to thi rd. Nye, ho wever, was coming under heavy at tack from Lowell Mou ral , Sr. The two riders battled for several laps until Mou ral Sr. was ab le to take the positio n, Whil e this was goi ng on, Stark an d Moural J r. were cruising a t the fron t of the pack. At the fin ish it was Star k taki ng the win follo wed by Moural J r. and Mou ral Sr. Moural J r. took the holeshotto lead Mou ral Sr. a nd Stark a t the beginni ng of the second rnoto. Star k dispatched Mou ral Sr. an d closed the ga p to cha llenge Moural J r. for the lead, By th e end of the second lap , Stark pa ssed Mou ral J r. and started to pu ll awa y. Approac hing the stadium tabletop 10 begi n the th ird lap, Star k' s race came to an ab ru p t end when hIS chain bro ke. T h is le ft Moural Jr. with a comfor tab le lead over his father and Nye, who had been slicin g his way th rough the pack after a horrend ou s star t. Moural J r. cro ssed the fini sh line first for the overa ll; second an d third went to Moural Sr. and N ye respectivel y. In Min i ac t ion, C urtis Fo rd p u t his Kawasaki at the fro nt of the p"ck a t the start of the first moto, but was qUIckly cha llenged by Brian Pierce. Pierce too k the lead as the riders crested the stadi um tableto p lor the first time. Ford.next came u nder a ttac k f~om Dust y Gyves. These two riders traded positions several tim es before Ford was forced off the track on the last lap, Pierce came hom e the win ner foll owed by Gyves and Ford.
