eLOCAL EVENTS ~ Correy did well to recover from a disastrous opening when his engine blew and completely disintegrated on the starting line . Three second p laces and his win over Moran were enough to see him through , but Correy, who was the only American to qualify for last year's final, will be hoping he does not have the same mechanical ' problem s a t Bradford. The real American surprise was Mill er, whose fast gating netted him 10 points and gave him fifth place in the score chart to guaran tee his place in h is first World Final. T wo points behind Moran , Sweden 's Per Jonsson too k the silver medal while third place on the pres entation rostru m wen t to th e current titleholder, Nielsen , wh o defeated fellow Dan e Jan Pedersen after th ey had tied f,N at II points. Huffman, Highland haul at Washougal ' A mateur Motocross By Don Schneider WASHOUGAL, WA, AUG. II yan Huffman and Shawn Highland scored ov erall wins at Washougal MX Park prior to the 12S/S00cc AMA National. Held in conj u nc tion with the professional event , over 700 amateur riders participated in the annual event. Divison one in the 12Scc B class saw Jason McCormick go wire-to-wire for the first moto win. Behind him, Jeff Sowards and Ryan Huffman wag ed th eir own war , exchanging second pla ce numerous times until Huffman capture d the position. Moto two saw Huffman, McCormick and Forrest Transue dominate the star t. Huffman and McCormick moved away from the pack early on. Transue had a solid third-place finish ahead of Sowards and Bill Radcliff. Division one in the 2S0ccC class saw form er 80-1OScc pilot Shawn Highland devastate the competition, taking both moto victories. Mike Rutenbergs (2-3) and Brian Starr (4-2) were good for second and third, respectively. Division two in the 250cc C class saw •Kelly Corwin rail the holeshot in moto one. His lead lasted a half lap as he took a major soil sample, falling out of the top 20. Lowell Fretz then took charge and held off a hard-eharging Mike Hodges. Greg Stein held on to third as Greeting and Shephard rounded out the top five. MOIO two belonged to Shepa rd, as he went wire-to-wire for th e win. Fretz a n d Monty Hill dogged Shepard th roughout the moto to no avail. Hill im proved his position over Fretz by ' mow end. Hodges and Ronald Park rounded out the top five. Division one in the 2S0cc B class saw Richard Postma sneak by on the inside for the holeshot. Ryan Huffman and Casey Horseman had the start, but swung too wide. Huffman was soon to retaliate, and by half a lap had cap tur ed the lead . The end of lap one saw Kevin Yeager, starting in lith, work his Yamaha up to sixth behind Ed Jensen. Darren Paulsen held down . fourth . R World Speedway Championship Intercontinental Semi-Final Moran, Miller, Correy qualifyfor World Final By John Hipkiss FJELSTED, DENMARK, AUG. 12 hawn Moran. th e 28-year-old rider . from Lakewood, California, led an American trebl e in the Intercontinental Semi -Final of the World Speedway Champi on ship h eld at Fjelsted, Denmark. Moran, who dropped only one point in five superb rides, topped th e score cha rt two poin ts clear of his nearest cha llen ger to reach his first World Final since 1985. H e will be joined in the last stage at Bradford, England, on Sept emb er I by the other American contenders, Rick Miller and Ronnie Correy. If Moran can reproduce his semi final form, he could be a real threat to Hans Nielsen's world crown. Although the track at Fjelsted was hard and slick, giving riders little hope of overtaking once they were left behind, Moran had no problems. Showing lightning reflexes at the starting gate, Moran looked to be a winner from his S 20 op ening heat when he proved too fast . for Nielsen. The on ly tim e Moran was beaten was in his third race when he was headed by Correy, but by th en Moran was assured of hi s place in the World Final. It was a much happier story for Moran than it was in last year 's champ ionship, when he was barred from compe ting after fail ing a breathalyzer test in a Long T rack qual ifyinground. (Moran claimed he had taken a drink during the night becaus e he could not sleep. ) H e was one of several rid ers who were ordered to take a test again in Denmark , but this tim e he was cleared. After his impressive win, Moran was making no predictions , bu t he has already set his sights on becoming the first American World Ch ampion since Bruce Penhall in 1982. "I'll just go out and do my best," Moran said , humbly. Moran paid tribu te to an other exchampion, Michael Lee, who took the title back in 1980and is currently under suspension for not making prompt paym ents of fin es imposed five years ago for fai ling to fulfill his British League commitments. "Mike's been preparing my bikes and they were tuned to perfection. 1 owe a lot 10 him," explained Moran. On lap four, Pau lsen moved in on Horseman and motored by for thi rd. Soon after , he got by Postma to finis h second. Yeager doubled by Jensen through the whoops by moto's end to garner fourth. MOIO two saw Huffman scream through tum one in the lead and never relinquish it, going I-I for the overall. Yeager , with another dismal start from 12th moved up behind Postma in third by lap three. Pushing hard, Yeager blew the turn after the white flag and re-entered the race in sixth. Postma 's h 3-3 netted him third. Th e 30-40 A class saw Wa Nlen Hickman take both moto wins over Michael Preston (2-2) and Richard Merritt (3-3). Curtis Moritz (S-4) and Michael Chase (6-S) finished fourth and fifth respectively. ".Aj In the Old Timers A class, Dave Merklin and overall winner Bob Krah tangled and went down in turn on e. Dave Russell took advantage of thei r falls a nd motored into the lead earl y on . Mike Hickman and Leroy Smith battled for a lap and a half until Hickman look control. Soon after passing Russell, Hi ckm an runn'ing out front, fell victim to the hard charge . of Krah on the white-flag lap. Moto two was different as Krah pu lled th e hol es hot and went untouched. Hickman also showed his tal ents in keeping within striking distance of Krah the entire moto. Hickman, though, fell prey to Merklin on th e final lap to garner second. The Open B class saw the appearance of the 1990 CMC PAC-West Champion Brett Bierek, showing up on his new factory -supported 1991 ATK. Leading both motos until the end, Bierek fell victim to Rod Comstock, who kept Bierek in sight: an d pulled off th e victories. Co mstock's II tally netted him the overall win over Brett Bierek (2-2), Kevin Delap (4-3) and Dwayne Dany luk (3-4). f,N Resu lts 50: I. Ch auncy Ca ll {Yam): 2. Ryan Coleman (Ya m): 3.
