McDow ell edged his R &R Racing Ro tax a head for th e win. Hebb, J eff Dietz, Mike Reid , Cory Perr eault and Steve Rasmussen were bound for th e Last Cha nce Qualifier. Bobb y McDow ell led semi two away wi th K ris Kiser, Craig Este lle and Brian Ti llso n in pursuit. Tillson worked his way u p to lead by the half way point, and went on to win. McDo well edged Kiser for seco nd. Estelle , Troy Nor ri s and Marc Gifford ro unded o ut th e LCQ field. E Last Chance Qualifier Bobby McDowell on ce again read the starte r' s light right and led the first two la ps before Hebb went screaming by. Hebb pulled to a solid lead and the win over McDowell, Kiser , Reid a nd Perreault. Harley-Davidson factory rider Chris Carr won the Sturgis Fairgrounds Half Mile to solidify his lead in the 600cc National Championship point standings. II efend ing two-time 600cc National Champion Chris Carr became the first double winner of 1990 by dominating the Sturgis Fairgrounds Half Mile, the second AMA 600cc . National Dirt Track to be hosted by th e Jackpine Gypsies in two days. The race appeared to be in jeopardy wh en, just as practi ce was drawing to a close th e clouds that had threatened all morning opened up and rain fell for abo u t an hour. H ow ever, wh en the rains ended th e tra ck was worked into excelle nt co nditio n. "Everything worked perfect all day ," said Carr. " T he bike was really working, and th e track was great. It would have been real dry and slick if it wasn 't for th e ra in." D 14 Time Trials Davey Durelle has owned this tra ck over the last few years, but his lap record of 25.10 seconds was in danger as Carr had been timed by pit watches as low as 23.92. Steve Rasmussen was th e fourth rider on the trac k and the first to brea k th e record at 24.94. How ever, Rasmussen wo u ld end up wit h the 35th fastest tim e as 39 riders better ed the o ld recor d. As expected, Carr rode his HarleyDavidson/ Ara iiTsubaki/ Hap J ones / White Bros.vYoko/ Alp inesta rsspo nsor ed 600 to the qu ickest lap at . 24.08 seconds. Texans Terry Poovey and Mike Hale tu rned in times of 24. 17 an d 24.26, res pec tively, while Dan Ingram was a close fourth a t 24.28. Track favorite Durelle clocked a 24.38. Tim Mertens looked real smooth, turning a 24.43 for sixth. Greg Sims was riding only th e Junior National but turned th e seventh fastest time at 24.47. Larry Pegram (24.48), Jason Fletcher (24.58) a nd Cory Perreault (24.63) rounded out th e top 10. Heats Scott Stump got th e hol eshot in heat on e but Carr took over o n lap two . Carr easily won as he was clocked laps as quick as. 23.89. Stu m p settled into second, then had to hold off the laterace cha rge of J am es Hart. All three advanced to th e National. Larry Pegram led heat two o ver Aaron Hill and T erry Poov ey, but Poovey had hi s Marioneaux Racing Harley working well a nd . mov ed up to first. Poovey a nd Pegram then pulled away, leaving Hill alo ne in third. The third heat eas ily fell to Tim Merten s. Mike Hal e ran a lo ne in seco nd while Will ie ·McCo y wo rked hi s wa y a ro und Bria n Tillson for third. T he last Expert heat look ed lik e a r u na way fo r Da n Ingram. Davey Durelle had to first dispose of Mickey Fay, then ma ke up a lo t of ground. Du relle p ut his Donahu e H-D by Ingram on the last lap for th e wi n. Fay was a lonesome thi rd. Sem is Bryan McDow ell and Dave Hebb were putting on a terrific show in the first semi wh en J ason Fletcher fell , bringing out the red £lag. 600cc National The sta rtin g lineup wa s al tered wh en the second-fastest heat winner, Tim Mertens, was sent to the penalty line. Carr quickl y took com ma nd and by th e half way point had a six -second lead. Poovey held second over Durel le, H ale, Stum p a nd Hill. Stump retired on lap three, giv ing him 15th. The fifth lap saw Carr already far a hea d. Durell e was all over Poovey trying for second, but slip ped off the groove, giving Poovey a short reprieve. Hill led Hale, In gram , James Hart and Bryan McDo well in fourth. The halfway mark found the top th ree still the sam e, but Ingram had moved to fourth with H ale, Hill , McDow ell , Hart a nd Mert ens clos e behind. Durelle gained his lost ground back on Poovey and took over second on lap 12. Durelle in ched awa y from Poovey, bu t co u ld not get clo se to Carr . " At first I was hoping to get around Terry (Poovey) right away and try to foll ow Carr a little. At least I would have been able to see where he was ri d ing. He definitely had th e hot line aro und the tra ck," said Durell e. Lap 13 was unlucky for Ingram as he slid down: "I was just trying too hard," he said. Lap 15 found Hale a solid fourth , while Hill, Tillson, Mertens, McDowell , Hart, Fay, McCoy and Hebb rounded out the field. Carr's win padded his points lead as he now leads Hale, 71 to 38. Durelle held o n for second over Poovey . Hale cru ised in fourth. Brian Tillson moved up to fifth over Mertens , Hill , Fay, McDow ell, H art, McCoy and Hebb. Junior Fast junior qualifier Greg Sims took a close race from Steve Rasmussen in the first heat. James Hart dogged Clint Vahsholtz all th e way in heat two and took the win, moving into first with one lap left. J ason Fletcher took second on the last lap. Ti llso n ended up taking seco nd on lap nine; he now has a seven-point lead o ver Rasmussen, who finished sixth. _ Pro-Am T he three P ro-Am heats were won by J eff Eklund, Verd een Langland a nd . Mike Dillon. T he first heat winner ran away with th e main. Arai /Lillie R&D/Uncle Rick/Mom-sponsor ed Eklund moved by Dillon to take a win th at he dedi cated to hi s still -h ospitalized uncle, Steve Eklund.
