GDIRT TRACK m they'd take my bik e and give it to another gu y on th e team . But this is all mine. That 's my bik e and the $20,000 I won tod ay is all mine. " I cou ldn 't ha ve don e it without a lot of help, though, Hank (Scott) built th e motor and he's freshened it up. I' ve got a spo nsorshi p team tha t can 't be beat - F&S Harley-Da vidson, KK Motorcycl e Su p p l y, St orz, SuperTrapp, Bell Helmets and John Dragoo," said Moreh ead. " And now I've go t to run and call my wife. Damn C!I it, we did it!" Resul ts Marylander Scott Saunders (34) got by Terry Poovey ( I S) in th eir heat race and then passed T im Mertens to finish second beh ind heat race winner R onn ie Jones. Steve Morehea d had the biggest pa yday of his career, winning over $20,000. J un ior Na tional winner Jason Fletcher had more than Miss Hagerstown Speedway to make him sm ile. He had j ust won his second Junior National of the year. order of the front-runners a t the end of the lap read : Morehead , Carr, J ones, Park er, Rogers, In gram. Parker, who had fin ish ed a dis tan t third in hi s hea t race, was on a cha rge that had taken him from hi s second row start to fifth at the end of lap two, to fourth on lap three and then to th ird on lap four. "( T uner Bill ) Werner got it working after the hea t," said Par ker. Morehead stayed in fro nt, but it was apparent that Carr, who was runni ng second , was losin g grou nd to th e leader. By the end of the fifth lap , the racers who would fin ish in the top five spots - Morehead , Carr, Park er, J ones and Poo vey - were running in the top five. Only a lat er pass wo uld change the running order. T hat pass came on the 12th lap when Parker got aro und his teamma te Carr to take over second for good . Parker's move into th e runner-up spot set th e top finishin g spo ts. But behind the front-runners there were several posi tion changes. Rogers slowed dramatically on lap four, dropping back to last, where he would finish. ESP Racing 's Ingram and cro wd favorite Springsteen were ru nni ng with the fron t-runners in the earl y go ing bu t were drop ped back to slots seven and eigh t, respecti vely, by Farris on lap seven . Farris settled · into sixth , where he woul d fini sh , bu t In gram 's sli de backward s wasn 't over as both Springsteen and Saunders moved by him on lap II. The rema inder of the race was a follow-the-leader affair with no position cha nging and when the checkered n ag was waved it was Moreh ea d crossin g the fin ish line with his left fist punching holes in the air. " Everybod y has to have their da y and to day was ou rs, " said a jubila n t Morehead. " Look at who go t second and thi rd (Parker and Carr). Scott and Chr is run up front all the tim e. We pri vat eers need our day and da mn it, today was our day. It was a dog fight , though . Get out front early was the strategy and it work ed. Damn, I'm happyl" Shortly a fter the race had ended , a shower let loose and taking cover in a reporter's rent al car, Morehead said, "This is so grea t I don 't kn ow wha t to say. You kn ow, when you ride for someone else you give them half of th e money or something like that. I rod e for the factory (Har ley-Davidson) and Brian Tillson , winner of th e other Junior heat race, finished second in the Nation al , after di splacing Georgie Pri ce and then Harold Dorsey Jr. fro m that spot. Dorsey finished third with Price fourth. The win moved Fletcher, the on ly Junior to score two Nationa l wins in the 10 ro unds of the 12-ro und series run th u s far , into seco nd beh ind Tillson in the Junior Nati on al point standings . Fletch er displaced Steve Rasmussen , who finished 12th in the fina l, from th e second slot. 8 Nation a l Promoter Frank Plessinger cou ldn 't come up with a crowd count, altho ugh he seemed to be p leased with th e turnout. " If we had run last month, you wo uldn' t have believed th e crowd we would have had," said Plessinger. The gra ndstands wh ich lin e the fron t straight at the facili ty appeared to be three-quarters fu ll. Pole-sitter Rogers chose a starting spo t three slots from the in sid e of the trac k and he was joined on the front row by Farri s on the outside pol e, Carr next , then Ingram to his right, with Morehead and Jones to hi s left on the insi de. Row two read - from th e outside do w n Merten s, Springstee n, Parker, Roeder, Saunders and Davis. Lewis , Poo vey and Estelle occu p ied ro w three. Prior to the star t of the Nationa l, . veteran Terry Poo vey had su mmed up what all were about to see: " It 'll be toug h to pass. You might get (pass) a guy off a corn er, but tha t's abo ut it." Nowhere is a start more impo rtant th an o n a groove half mil e, a n d everyo ne on th e starting grid demonstra ted that th ey were well aware of tha t as the field blasted away at the Clash of the green light. After the in itial sorting out; first in turns one and two and then in turns three and fOUT, it was 600 National Champion Ca rr leadin g J ones, Morehead , Rogers and the rest of the field across th e line at the completion of th e first of 20 laps. Carr stayed u p fro nt on th e next trip aro und the oval , bu t on lap three Morehead go t one of the drives off a corn er that Poovey had mentioned and took th e lead away from Carr as th ey headed dow n the back stretch.
