World Championship 500cc MX Series: Round 11 Martens triumphsin Luxembourg By By Alex Hodgkinson KOHLENBERG, LUXEMBOURG, AUG. 12 acky Martens gave Luxembourg its first-ever 500cc GP win when he combined 1-4 moto finishes to take the overall win before a home crowd at the final European GP of the season at Kohlenberg. . Martens, who is originally from Belgium but rides with a Luxembourg license. beat newly-crowned World champ Eric Geboers in the first moto, wh ile the second race was won by Dirk Geukens over David Thorpe. who fini shed second overall with a 3-2 moto tally. Kurt Nicoll completed the top tltree overall with 5-3 moto fini shes. The battle now goes to America with Geboers th e cha mpion and Nicoll almost certain of second. With Thorpe declining 10 travel to the final GP, the battle for the bronze medal is between Geukens and Martens . with Geukens holding an Ll-point advantage. <> With fast-starter Paul Malin still somewhat stunned after landing on his head in the morning's timed practice, there was a chance for someone else to take the holeshot and it was Finn Arto Pantilla who stormed to the front. But on the second lap Martens was past him and the factory KTM rider quickly established a big lead as the other riders fought to get on terms with Pantilla. Nicoll had made the best start of the big three but it was soon clear that he was having a bad ride. After the race it was discovered that the front brake was jammed on , although he managed to finish fifth. Geboers and Thorpe both passed Ni coll with ease and set off after Pantilla. As they closed on the Finn after 20 minutes Geboers had a simple fa ll and dropped behind Thorpe. But the new World cha mp is still full of enth usiasm and he recovered weir ' to pass Pantilla on the same lap as Thorpe with 10 minutes remaining in the 40minute plus two-lap moto , Within two laps Geboers had also passed Thorpe. when the two riders went offa jump side by side and collided in midair. Geboers came out of it the best although neither rider fell. On the last two laps they closed up on Marten s. but not sufficientl y to threaten his win. Kees Van der Yen retired early after a collisio n with Jeff Leisk damaged his rear brake. Leisk had a good comeback ride after sitting out several rounds du e 10 his broken finger. After starfing 13th, Leisk came thr ough to disp lace Dietrnar Lacher for sixth before the race was half an hour old. Franco Rossi had started sixth, bu t fell and was passed by Lacher and Leisk after 15 minutes before" recovering to fight off a cha llenge from Georges Jobe and Malin. In the end Rossi was the strongest of the trio and held off Jobe for eigh th, whil e Malin dropped righ t ou t of the points after an incident with Mervyn Anstie. "He put me in the fence as he came past ," said Malin. "I tried 10 do it to him in the next corner and came off worst," Leif Persson got the holeshot in rnoto two. but went straight in the overwatered first turn and dropped to eighth. Then halfway tltrough the first lap Ludovic Lucquin failed to brake and put Persson in the fence. A frustrated Persson was soon back in the pits. Martens took over the lead but he fell before the end of the first lap and dropped to fourth. Geukens assumed J
