but the crafty veteran kept pace by pushing his bike extra hard in the turns. On lap three, Russell moved up from fourth to first. The 4500 fans on hand were big Russell fans, and they cheered with approval when the bright green Kawasaki came up to turn five (a favorite spectating area ) in the lead. Smith wasn 't about to give in so easily and gave chase. The lead in g duo gradually began to pull away from th ird-placed Ha rth. The rest of the field was beginning to spread out as well. Hall was safely in fourth, conti nuing his comeback after being inj ured in Seattle, while Jacks was holding off Quanerley for fifth. Quanerley hoped to put in a topthree ride at Road Atlanta, but his pri mary Dutchman Suzuki lost a motor in practice. "That bike had all the trick engine and suspension pa rts. Now he'll just have to take what he can get on the back-up bike," said Dutch man Racing T eam Captain Dave Schlosser. Rich Ol iver was putti ng in perhaps the most aggressive ride of his career. After being blown away by the torqueladen superbikes heading up the hill out of turn one, O liver began his assau lt. After crossing the line in 20th place at the end of lap one, Oliver scratched an d clawed his way up to 11 th by lap five, then ni nth by the halfway poi nt. Oliver's frustra tion at workin g so hard only to be passed on the uphi ll sections showed in some of his passes - severa l times. Ol iver un characteristically forced his way past another competitor, even if it meant leaving some fluorescent orange paint behi nd. American Eagle rider Fritz Kling got a first-han d look at Ol iver's aggression and was somewhat puzzled by it: "He was stuffing people left and righ t. O ne time. he nearl y lost it - both feet off the pegs. 1 always thou gh t of him as a smoo th and controlled rider. .." Up front, the Russell/ Smith confro ntation conti n ued. Smith 's Suzuki migh t have had a slight acceleration advantage on Russell's Kawasaki , bu t Russell had the advanta ge in the handling department. With four laps to go, the win was still up for grabs. However, it instantly became Ru ssell's race when Smit h nearly crashed h is big Suzuki under the Nissan Bridge. "I got in there a littl e too hot and tucked the front end. 1 though t my race was over, but somehow -the tire caug h t traction and 1 didn't crash. 1 tip-t oed through the next coup le of turns to see what the tire was goi ng to do. By the time 1 got a little confidence back, Russell was gone," Smith said. a P J 1 akes 12 National Titles at Ponca City PJ 1 Riders co nt inue to dominate t heir competition using the PJ 1 Goldfire Pro Two-St roke Oi l Advantage When it comes t o Ultra High RP M , Hi gh Horsepower two-stroke engine protection, not hing performs li ke PJ1 Goldfire Pro, Get down to your local motorcycle dea ler and get the PJ 1 Goldfire Pro Advantage .
