"There were trails out th ere that you ' wou ldn 't even want to hike up," said ATK's Paul Krause. "T he whole loop was side hills - narrow little goat trails everywhere and lots of rock s." The tired riders battled head to head with the difficult terrain and wh en th e average speed sho t up to 36 mph with 20 miles to go, timekeeping flew o u t the window. " T hirty-six was impossible on those trails - we were lucky ' to go ma ybe 24, so we were eig ht to 10 minutes lat e in th e last sectio n, " said Roeseler. " T he speed didn 't reall y ma tter - it was just telling you to go for it." " I thought the last half was way too . fast - it was an excelle nt race until that part," said' Hawkins, wh o had maintained a troub le- free ride all the way. "There's nothing wrong with having a 36 mph average if they leave you in the woods but I was running 60 to 70 mph down little goa t trails with a bit of grass on either side and no margin for error. " It was a long da y too - o ne of th e longest I've ever ri dden ," Hawkins said. "I'm not complain ing but we could've done wi thout th e last 30 mil es and it still wou ld've been an excellent race. It was just too long. The or ga nizers proved th eir point early in the day - the y didn't need to pound us." But Hawkins wasn't giving up. H e kep t charging all the way and wh en he sp lashed through the final stream 10 minutes behind tim e for th e fin al sectio n and more than seven hours after the race began . " Suzuki won it [or me," said Hawkins. " It's easy to win a race wh en th e bike works like' mine does and I have to th ank J eff Slaven s [or building th e ~ " motor and Factory Con necti o n for the suspension. I had a lot of su p po rt from Suzuki and my pi t crew from back home was g rea t. T hey took care of my bike so all I had to worry about was me and that makes a lot of differen ce. " Peo p le will have to th ink up a new . rumor now," said th e winner. " T hey don 't seem to think that I can ride in the rocks - th at's wh at th ey've been sayin g, but there were billions of rocks o u t th ere today so I gu ess I proved them wrong. We'll have to see wh a t they say now." Pepper spe nt th e last loo p just hanging o n. . " Abo u t 160 miles into it all you' re doing is loo king for the fini sh, " said Pepper. "Everybody was tir ed in that last sectio n and with a 35 m ph a verage yo u just do what you can." Kadlec mad e u p tim e in th e fast pa ced final mil es to cap tu re fourth o vera ll with 55 points; Bruckbauer 's Yam ah a landed fifth wi th a points to tal of 64 , and Ru ssell limped aro u nd happily aft er earning sixth overall with 67 points despite a badly bruised foo t. Hines overcame his ea i ly problems to finish seventh. " I had a terr ibl e day righ t fro m the start and th e tra ils were very hi gh spee d for what we'r e used to for en dures, ' sa id Hines. " I got reall y dehy d ra ted because of som ething I was tak ing for the elevation, too . I just had lots of problems. The next o ne call onl y be better. " Hines was followed in by local racers Kevin Davis (79) and Chris Wilban ks (80),.and Kurt Hough ro unded o ut the top 10 with an 84. " No t too goo d today," sai d Hough . Team Green's Larry R oeseler was another top contender a t the Co lorado Natio nal. Roesel er fi nished just two po ints beh ind Haw kins fo r seco n d overa ll. "I go t a flat right after th e third ga s and had to rid e it to the fourth ga s, and I just wasn't riding really good today. The trails were tough too . The ones that aren' t rocky. were okay but the pure rocks aren 't an y fun to ride in at all. " £N Resul ts 0 / A: I. Ra ndy Ha wkin s (Suz) 49; 2" Larry Roeseler (Ka w) 5 1: 3.
