California Trail Rides I don 't reme m ber much after that, but I wo uld just like to thank Bob Moore. It was hot and peop le were ha ndi ng hi m water because he needed it too , but he was just handing it to me, dumping it on m y feet and wri sts to cool me off. He was just as ho t as I was, and I thin k th a t is rea ll y some thi ng of a no ther rid er to co me and help me out like tha t. I reco vered fairl y q uickly when they got me to th e a mbula nce. Prior to yo ur year as a p ri vateer in the 125ccNat iona ls, you had been a facto ry Suzuki rider for two years. What was the reason for th e split? It was purely financial. My first year wi th Suzuki I fin ished fifth a nd they dropped my salary $10,000. Then in 1988 I finished second and I expected to pick up the $10,000 again, but they turn ed aro und a nd wanted to dr op m y salary again. So I told th em I wo uld ra the r be a poor privateer arid rid e what I wanted to. I di dn't car e for Supercross at that lime because they weren 't my sty le a nd were getting very da ngerous. Las t year ri ding as a privateer was my most satisfying seaso n in Am erica. P resumabl y that finan cial di spute didn't affect your relations wi th Suzuki J apan. No . I kep t m y part of the deal. I knew I didn't have a ride for 1989 but I went to the mo tocross banquet at the end of the '88 seaso n a nd said thank yo u to Suzuki for the su p port and the two good years wh ich th ey had giv en me. I could have bad -mouthed them but I didn't , so I kept a good relationship and think th at has paid off now . Why do so many Am ericans come to Europe now? For one thing ther e are so many cu tbacks in the States, and a lot of them co me thinking that it wi ll be easier to win a World titl e over here than to win a National titl e in the Sta tes. Is it? In certain ways perha ps it is. I don't th ink there are as many really fa st ri ders o ver here. I can only speak o f the 125cc class, bu t th e fast guys in th e G Ps are j ust as fast as th e fas t Americans. T here ar e some exce ptions. Ba yle is fast in America now, but h e was dominant over here last year. What does the future hold for Donny Schmit? I have a two-year co ntract with the Bieffe Suzuki team and hopefully I can win the World Championship. I thi nk I can do tha t this year, and hopefully 1991 will also be a good seaso n for me. Then I will just take it from there. I love raci ng a nd it has a lways been what I wanted to do , but you can never look further ahead than the nex t ra ce. I was all read y to qui t last year, but I go t a lit tle help from Pro Circuit and went o n. It 's the same here in Europe. If I can't ge t help, then I have my life to get o n with . Don' t get me wrong, I am fu lly committed to racing and winn in g. That is the most im po rta nt th in g to me at the moment and if so meone is willing to hel p me, then I am willin g to gi ve 110% tow a rds m y training and m y team. Motocross is my li fe at th e moment and I enjoy it , but wh en the lim e co mes tha t I can 't ge t a ride, I'm not go ing to dwell on it. I am go ing to be able to look back on my caree r and say 'jeez, I was aro und the whole co un try, I wa s second in the 125cc Na ti ona ls , I was a Grand Natio nal Am at eur Champion, I've been all over Europe, hopefully I'll be Wor ld Cha mpion, I've been on works bikes and I've seen th e hard life of a privateer. I made it. ' I' ve go t a lot of good mem ories to loo k back on, but when the ti me comes to quit, I have a life to live outside motocross.
