Tichenor is expectin g to race th e next National a t Troy, Ohio, J uly 29. Multi-time Supercross and Nat ional MX Champion ' Rick Johnson was back in the action at the Southwick National. The race marks the first tim e he ·has raced a National since reinjurlng his hand follow ing the Pontiac Supercross in April. "I ha ve had a lot of problems with my wris t," J ohnson said at Southwick, "b ut things are looking good. I have been working on a new therapy mac hine and have been getting more movem ent in my wrist 'al l the time ." Johnson also made it clear that he will be racing in th e U.S. in 1991 , " u n less som ething drastic happens." Johnson had thought about going to Europe to compete in the SOOcc GPs. The Honda factory rider will soon be moving a few miles up tlie California coast from EI Cajon to O'Livenhane, located near Carlsbad. ' According to Johnson, there are more p laces in that area to rid e. Kawasaki Team Green moto crosser T allon Vohland will be at Cycle City's open house in Rochester, Minnesota , on August 17 'to sign auto-' graphs and talk with fans. Vohland's appearance is in conjunction with the i\ ugust 19 125/ 500cc National in nearby Millville. Defending AMA. Superbike National Champ ion Jamie J ames will replace inj ured Ita lian Giancarlo Falappa on the factory Ducati Superbike team at the next round of the World Championshi p Superb ike Road Race Series in Sugo, Ja pan, Augu st 26. Mean'while, Falappa ha s been moved to Bologna, Italy, followi ng an operation in Austria where his crash originally occurred. In addition to breaking both femurs and his left forearm , Falappa also damaged 'some vertabrae, and will undergo extensive therapy in the hopes of returning to racing in tim e for the .Italian round of the series at Monza, Octob er 7. Schwantz wins French GP T eam Lucky Stri ke Suzuki's Kevin Schwantz (ri gh t) beat Rothmans H onda 's Wayne Ga rdner by 2.5 seconds to wi n the Fren ch Gr and Prix at Le Mans on July 22. Ch ampionship le ader Wayne Rainey finish ed th ird on his Marlb oro Yama ha. Rothmans Honda's Michael Doohan fin ished founh with four-time World Champion Eddie Lawson fifth on th e second Team Marlboro Rob erts Ya ma h a . Cagiv a 's Rand y Mam ol a fin ished eighth. The win moves Sch wantz closer to Rainey in th e point standings, bu t the T exan still trails the Cal ifornian by 28 points, 181 -153. In the 250cc GP , Span iar d Carlos Cardus rode hi s H onda NSR25 0 to th e win over Marlboro Agostini Yamaha's Luca Cadalora. Aprilia's Loris Reggiani finished th ird. Championship leade r John Kocinski crashed while second , seven laps from th e fin ish. With Kocinski's DNF , Cardus moves to within seven points of the Californian, 149-142, in the 250cc point standings. Dutchman Hans Spaan rode his Honda to the win in the 125cc GP, and England's Steve Webster and Gavin Simmons won the Sidecar GP. While the relatively recent come backs of Fredd ie S pence r in th e GPs were met with cyni cism by his fellow riders, th e AMA Sup erbike continge n t at Miami, for the most pan , greeted hi m with open ar ms. Current AMA Superbik e Champion Jamie J ames was impressed with his Louisiana neighbor after meeting him for the first time at. the Miami GP. " He's a real ni ce guy ," James said. Followin g the race, th e two Louisianans excha nged phon e numbers, and James plans on call ing the three-time Wor ld Champion in hopes of the two going riding together. Former AMA Pro Twins Champion Doug Brauneck was riding injured at the Miami National following a crash in Monza , Ita ly, July 7. According to Brauneck, the accident occurred during the second qualifying session of an International Battle of The Twins race when a slower rid er in front of him sudden ly stood his bike up in a high-speed sweeper. " I' m not reall y sure what happened because I go t knocked unconcious," said Brauneck, who suffered a broken left ankle and bruised hip. " Eyewitn esses told me that I hit his (the slower rider's) rear wheel. " At the time, Brauneck was riding Dr. John Wittner's prototype Moto Guzzi which, said Wittner, " is no more." Wittner now plans to build a new bike, most likely in Italy. Brauneck had recorded the th ird fastest tim es during the session, with Wittner saying that the Guzzi has finally gotten on terms with th e eigh t-valve Ducatis. Look for Will Davis to compete in th e rescheduled DirQuoin ' Mil e on Sunday, July 29, on a bike powered by the Harley-Davidson XR750 engine he claimed from the Harley factor y team after.th e Albuquerque Mile. The engin e, which failed to last the distance for Scott Parker at Albuquerq ue, has been rebuilt by tuner Edd ie Adkins. . American road racer Richard Arnaiz (Hon) fini shed second in the most recent round of the European F-I Championship held at Brno, Czechoslovaki a, July 23. Arnaiz led th e race until the final corne r where his bike began to starve for fuel and he was pas sed by series points leader Sven Siedel, who rid es a Suzuki for Yoshimura of Germany. Arnaiz now lies second in the cha mpionsh ip , seven points back with two rounds remain ing in the series. AI Salaverria, winner of the 250cc Grand Prix class of the Miami GP, got a special treat on h is flight home to northern Ca liforn ia. Seated in th e coach section of an American Airlin es 767 with his trophy beside him, a stewardess recognized him from the rostrum photo that appeared on the front page of · th e Miami Herald. Result: A first-cla ss upgrade for the 20year-old former Randy Mam ola Racing team member, who once carried ni cknam e "The Mutant . the Teenager.
