LOCAL EVENTS R CMC Pac-West Nationals: Final rounds Bell takes title at Washougal Floryfastest again at Road America By Don Schneider W ASHOUGA WA, JUNE 23-24 L, • o re than 450 racers turned o ut for the final two rounds of the CMC Pac-West Natio na ls at Washou gal , and it was Mike Bell, Mike Carso n , Ri ck Simmer and Lowell Thom son stealing the spotlight both days. { On Saturday, the start of the first 125cc Pro moto saw Suzuki-mou nted Steve 'Friesen nail the holeshot and Simmet overtake the lead soon after. Larson, who was runnin g third, took over second when Friesen go t stuck in a mud bog and lost valuable positio ns. During the second lap , Larson flew by Simmet through the whoops, and by the fifth lap, Friesen moved back up and settled into fourth. At the same time Sirnmet was slowed in the mud bog , letting Thom son by. T hen, as the race approached the checkered flag, Larson got a flat tire and eventually dropped to third , giving Thomson the lead with Simm er seco nd. At the finish it was Thomson, Simmer, Larson and Friesen. ~ Simmet blew into the early lead at the start of the second moto and led for most of the race. After a third pla ce start , .Larson began pressuring the leader late in the race. Lar son eventua lly found an opening and slipped by Simmet taking 'o ver the lead and even tual moto win and overall. Third went to Thomson . b In the 250cc Pro bout, Larson led from start to fini sh in the first moto over .Friesen, Mike Bell, Larry Jackson an d Mark Hall. 'fT Round two saw Bell jam into the early lead foll owed by David Bailey and J..arson. Larson, however, opened up the throttle an d charged by both Bailey and Bell for the lead. La rson took comma nd of the race, as he cru ised out in front for the win . . Bell held off Bailey for .second. On Sunday , the final .round of the series, Bell clinched the 125 and 250cc Pro class titles, despite Thomson and Hall winning the 125 and 250cc Pro classes on the day. Bell finished fifth in the 125cc class and second in the 250cc division . Kolen o held the lead gomg into th e wooded sectio n 01 th e track, but it was Sm ith that emerged from the woods as the leader. Smith held o n to tak e the checkered a head of Kol eno, Beech , Eckstine and Steinfurth. Beech too k th e lead off the lin e to begin moto two wi th Koleno, Eckstine and Smith trailing.
