eMOTOCROSS I 6th Annual Volunteer StateChampionship_s Mike Brown (483) leads Todd Neal (1) and Eric McLear (741) away from a first-turn pileup in the l25cc A class. Although Darrell Bailey (34) passed Brad Clark (58) to win the second 250cc C Division Two mota, Clark took the overall victory with his 1-2 mota finishes. Brown walks off with w insatMuddyCreek By Barbara and Loren Williams B LOUNn'ILLE, TN,JUNE30-JULY I here were three double class winners among 512 ent rants at the 6th An nua l Kawasak i Volu nteer State Motocross Ch ampion sh ips he ld at Muddy Creek Raceway, bu t th e bigges t winner was Mike Brown. The Kawasaki rider easily handled the 125 and 250cc A class riders from a dozen states as he turned four holeshots into wins and walked away with $1200 for h is efforts. Brow n produced his first holeshot at the start of the first 125cc A moto whi le eigh t riders who arrived at turn one at the same time tan gled bars an d went do wn. Amid the confusio n, Mike And rews, J im Neese and Kevin Walk er sorted themselves out and remounted to pursue the lon g-gone pack. Walker T 26 ended up finis hi ng II th , j ust ahead of And rews and Neese. Up fro nt, Brow n was outpacing Kenn y Kizzar, Er ic McLea r, Sco tt Watkins, Todd Neal and Brian Swi n k. Watkin s had some bad luck on th e first lap and fell back to midpac k. allow ing Neal and Swi nk to advan ce. Watkin s' luck sp illed over onto Neal when he mi sjudged a jump and cras hed. Neal fell at a narrow part of the track and was una ble 10 remo unt unt il nearl y the entire field had passed him . . T hat put McLear and Swi nk side by side, a familiar situation for the two rivals fro m Michigan. At the end of lap two Swin k drop ped McLear back 10 fourt h and drew a bead on Kizzar. Two laps la ter Swi nk was challenging Kizzar, bu t washed ou t in a hairpin tu m and fell hal£way do wn a hill. Swi nk was able to remount before McLear could pass, and the two battled to the fin ish with Swin k coming out on top. Brown put his T eam Green / Answer/ Pro Circu it/Smi th/Dunlop! Acerb is!Bell-backed Kawasaki across the finis h lin e first ahead of Kizzar. Sean Dukes jum ped out of the gate on Brown 's pegs a t the start of th e seco nd rnoto and hounded Brown throug ho ut the eig h t-lap rnoto. Brown held him off to take th e win. Walker ca me into th e first turn next to Duk es, but sett led into a rh ythm as the two front-runners pulled away. A slightly incorrect line on th e back stre tch allo wed Kizzar to slip by Walker and take over third. A sho rt tim e later Swi n k took advantage of a wide tum and du cked under Walker to go after Kizzar. Swink caugh t him in th e woods section on lap six and poured on the juice to claim thi rd at the checkered flag despite a washing out on a sweeper. Swink 's pai r of thirds was good enough for second overa ll behind Brown . A rain shower prior to the start of the first 250cc A rnoto made th e track a bit slick and muddy in some spo ts bu t held the du st down . While the newly-m oisten ed su rface held back some of the riders when th e ga te drop ped, it didn' t hinder Brown at all as he leaped 10 the front an d was gone. H ot on hi s trail was Walker, Swink, Kizzar and Ch ad Lough. The four riders behind Brown fou ght in a pack for posi tion until a slick spot in a sweeper cut Lough down and forced him 10 retire wh ile th e other three roared on. As Brown 's lead grew to 30 seconds, Walk er zapped Swin k to take over second at th e flag while Kizzar watch ed the whole thing from fourth followed by H ank Moree and Neese. - The final A moto of th e day saw Brown get yet ano ther holeshot wh ile Moree found h im self in close proximity to Dukes in th e first turn. After Duk es out-po wered Moree in an offcamber turn, Kizzar stepped up to cont in ue 10 hound Moree for th ird . Kizzar caug ht Moree in the wood s section, but Moree stood on h is position . Not far beh ind Walk er and Mike Andrews were having their own battl e, wit h Andrews getti ng around Walk er on lap seven 10 take over fifth. _ After getting caug h t napping at the start, Swink came off the li ne last and wasn 't able to make up any ground on th e lead ers. Besides Brow n 's perfect hand in th e A classes, two o the r doubl e-class wi nn ers tu rned in flawl ess performances. Bobby Gilbert dominated th e 29rid er 25+ B class and th e eq ua lly demanding 250cc Non-Current class with four first-place fin ishes . Kirk Hayes, a multiple amateu r dirt tra ck ch ampion . sho wed hi s winning hand of four aces in the Four-Stroke and End ur o cla sses 10 claim top hon ors. Kawasaki Tea m Gr een' s Gregory Ran d was a lso well on his way 10 th e same p innacle with do uble moto wins in the Seni or Min i class over Robert Stock and wi th a first-mo ta win in th e Schoolbo y class. However. a run- in w ith Bo Sh an no n i n th e seco nd Schoolboy rn oto pu t Rand over a berm and ended his cha nces of a pe rfect sweep. Pat rick Slate won the rnoto , and combined with hi s th ird pl ace finish in th e first rn oto he clai med the overa ll victory. Bret Beauch amp turned in a 2-2 sco re for seco nd overall while Shannon took third overa ll honors. Brad Clark had to work for h is victo ry in the first 250cc C moto as he came out of the hole fou rth behind c.c. Shafer, Scott Moore and Mike Nutter, H al£way thro ug h the moto, Clark had slipped to the front and went on to take the checkered flag' ahead of Moore. J amie H arrison . Jeramie Kin g and Shafer.
