close of lap o ne.
Larsen, on the Suns h ine Carpets/Shoei /
Wizard Tools-sponsored Wesla ke, found h is
way to Werner's rear lire and began to app ly
the p ressur e. Wern er and Larsen, bo th twotime Jun ior Nati onal Ch ampions , circled the
track in tight for ma tion. On the lilt h lap 01
th e eight h-mile o va l, ' Verner wen t into tum
three o n the pole. H e drifted wide in turn
lour and Larsen pegged hi s th rottle a nd
scor ch ed into first.
Werner sta yed wide and that all ow ed Larsen
to open up a massive lead which he ca rr ied
all t he wa y to st art er Paul Neighbor ' s
chec kered flag. Werner was a hall-straight
back in second. Ermolenko placed th ird with
Schwartz and Lu cero rounding o ut th e top
live.
The Sid ecars ope ned the ir IMS season with
Ra ndy Mcintyre a nd Robert Fox linding the
fast wav ar ound the track to win the six- lap
main. Steve Sta n ton and Tom Tufts, getting
read y lor a trip to Engl and , took the second
spot with Ken n y Mcintyre and Mickey Fasut
third. All three teams were o n Kawasa kis,
Sixteen-year -old Chris Manchester made his
IMS p ro debu t and won the Second Divisio n
ma in fro m the 20-yard line. In Third Divisio n,
Weslake-m o un ted Mark Cas tin walked oil
with the trophy. H is bro the r Jell placed
second .

Fritz Kling may be the cu rren t Kin ~ 01 Grattan.
but Ray Yoder is trying to diminish hi s
kingdom.
Although Kling isn 't the fastest man at
Grattan (Andy Fenwick currentl y hold s that
hon or ). he ca n lay claim to winning the most
races at the picturesque, two-mile road course
in th e last few years. And since Fenwick and
o ther G rattan last men like Kurt Hall and Scott
Zampach haven't sho wed up yet this year. the
biggest threat to Kling's dominance has been
Yoder . The Illi nois-based rider came to Grattan
thi s weekend o n a mi ssion to beat Kling in
round two of th e popular Michigan Grand Prix
Series.
