At the end of eig h t special tests and more than 350 miles of trail, the Kawasaki ace led defe nding National Enduro C hampion Randy H aw kins by just four seco nds, a nd three o the r riders were withi n 40 seco nds of the n u mber o ne spot. " It all ca me down to th e mo tocross sectio n a t th e end a nd I rode those last five la ps as hard as I co uld," sa id Roeseler. " It's on ly a 10 to 12 minute race but all my expe rie nce , everything I'v e been work ing on fo r years, I put into that last five-mi le section." Roeseler 's last minute charge paid 0 [[. The Kawasaki pi lot grabbed th e hol esh ot and stretched his lead to 61 seconds, to take the overall win wi th a four-day total of 2531 points. Last _ r~und wi n ner Kurt H ough took second overall and th e 250cc Intent class win wi th 2592 po ints, fin ishing withi n a second of third-place Bohumil Posledni of Czechoslovakia a nd fourth -place Hawkins. I " I' ve a lways enjoye d Idaho , but it's a bit different fo r me th is time becaus e I broke my neck here last year," said Roeseler. " I rod e o u t to th e p lace tha t I crashe d - it was part of th e special, test last year, and I sa t and stared at th e rock I hit for a w hil e. It was a stra nge feeling." R oeseler was back o n stride the mom ent th e racing began. H e clocked th e fastest time in th e fir st terrain test a nd finished JU S! two seco nds behind T eam Suzuki's H awkins in th e second test, to gain a three-second adva ntage go ing into da y two. " I had a pretty bad first day, " said the 250cc Ka wasa ki pi lot. " I fell down , in th e first test and go t beat en by 20 seconds. I had a lot of tim e to mak e up after that." " Being out. in front he lped a lot. There were some h ills that yo u needed to keep your; spee d u p on too - people bo ttl enecked on those further back." ' Roeseler still held a three-second lead at th e end of the seco nd day bu t fast times were being clocked througho u t th e fiel d. " I was o ut in fro nt of m y class both da ys but what really mad e me happy was th at I bea t Roeseler 's tim es in two of th e specia l stages on da y two ," said C h arl es H a lcomb , who en de d up winning th e Lightweight Fou r-Stroke class on a Suzuki DR350. ~. Mechani cal probl em s si d el ined ATK 's Garth Sweetland for the second day in a row, but ATK teammate Paul Kra use was hanging tough behind Husaberg-m ounted Greg Surdyke for seco nd i n th e Heavyw eight Fo ur Stroke division. " We had a few probl em s with the brakes on da y two ," Surdyke exp lained. " We used the wrong brake: fluid a nd it expanded and loc ked the rear brake in the special test."
