When the ta pes went u p in th e Scra tch main , Sisemore blew out of ga te three to lead th e o thers to the turn. \Vith a clear track in front Sisemo re hoo ked up, and was go ne for th e four-lap affa ir. Bob H icks. Joe Leduc and Mark Day went to battle for the ru nner-up spot as Sisemore d isappeared. Leduc slipped past Day to ta ng le with H icks for two laps ' unt il H icks dialed it in and let, Leduc to fight off Day. Sisemore wrapped it up as the checkered came out with H icks, Leduc and Day following . As the eig ht-lap , eig ht-rider Handicap ma in unfolded it was Bob Co ll ier leadin g the way in hi s debut as a d ivision o ne rid er. Co ll ier had never go ne th e dis ta nce in the rugged eight-lap race befo re, and after lead in g for th e first six laps Co llier began to tir e as J ess Ochoa kept tryin g to reel him in. Back in th e pack H icks, Sisemo re and Led uc were strugg ling to close in o n the two at th e fro nt. The first I25cc Pro moto saw O 'Neal / Scott/ LRD/Screwy Designs/Pro Circuit/Maximal White Bros./Eugene Suzuki-backed. Graves rag e throul$h 12 of his adversaries to win. Up from. pulhng th e ho leshot was rookie Rian Gan t, fo llo wed close ly by West . Ol sen and Grimm. By th e end of la p one, Olsen ha d pulled a double pa ss for the lead. By lap three, Graves had pulled ou t all the stops. Coming from last, he was knocking on Grimm's back door, puuing on h is aerial show for th e fan s, glidi ng over Grimm, gassi ng it by Gam in th e woods, a nd th en o u threaking O lsen to take over th e lead. By malO'Sen d the vetera n pros worked their way pa st th e newcomers. Graves won th e mo lO by 25 secords over Bart McDaniel and Grayson Han, with Don Biscigl ia inches a way from fourth. The first 250cc Pro moto saw Graves pull th e ho leshot and go unscathed to win. The war beh ind, th ough, was in the form of Mik e Bell, Hamness, Han and ex-National co ntender J im Anderson. O n lap two, Anderson hauled by Hart, and on la p four he hammered by Hamness for third . O n lap five, Ham ness tried 10 retaliate, bu t un ders hot th e do uble j ump, taking a mea n soil sample, On lap six. 28 Anderson ou t-smarted Bell and cruised to a second-p lace finish . By molO's end, Graves had again pulled in 25 seconds o n An derson, Bell , H art and Biscigli a. Mota two in the 125cc Pros saw H art p u ll th e ho leshot follo wed by West. Da ily, Strode and Graves. On lap o ne Daily and Strode wen t by West. O n lap two, Graves ju m ped the long double imo the pit, landi n g beside Strode. As th e two rid ers hit the bOllom, Graves co uld n' t tum as Strode took his line . Graves took a soil sam ple and remounted in eig h th p lace. O n lap fo ur. Hart handed the lead to Daily after crashing in the w hoops. Strode, West , Gam and Bisciglia tried to sto p a smoking G raves, bu t to no avail. G ra ves picked off Biscigl ia , Gant, West and Str ode by the end of lap six, but this took too lon g a nd Daily stayed u p fron t. Whe n th e checkers fell on lap seven, Graves had mo ved to within th ree seconds of Daily, Graves' 1-2 mot o fin ishes net ted him th e overall win, wi th th e cons isten t finishes of Don Biscig lia (4·3) for seco nd. After six lap s, T exter and McGum n had pulled away to sizeable margins for first a nd secon d. with Ohrstrorn , Bartley and Schneider still ba uli ng for third through fifth . The slick surface in tum 10 tried to take the win away fro m Texter wh en it threw his Sportster into a wicked sli de as he turned home for the checkers.
