determ ined to not let Stevens beat h im
ou t of th ird place. And he didn't .
" I felt bad for the crew after Dayton a," he said. " Now they can go hom e
feeling halfw ay decent. That's one of
the main reasons Stevens didn 't get
around me. "
Stevens felt sligh ted by the red flag:
" It (the race stop pi ng) defin itel y hurt
me," he sai d. "I had gotten a bad sta rt,
had caugh t up (turning a recordsetting 1:26.5 in the process) and was
basicall y where I wanted to be. 1 knew
I cou ldn 't lose Dou g (Ch andler) and
I thought it would just be a race to
the flag. I knew 1 was in trouble on
the restart. I didn 't get a good start and
was working my way into it, but 1 lost
a lot of time in traffic and 1 j ust
couldn' t get by J amie (James). H is bik e
was so strong, I'd have to either ram
him or he'd have to make a mistake.
I j ust ran ou t of laps. "
Accord ing to the stop watch of
Dunlop's Jim Allen, Stevens turned a
lap of I :26.11 in the restarted second
race on the final go-around.
Behind Stevens came Renfrow, who
had gotten the better of Russell.
Renfrow's RC30 was fitted with new
Dunlop tires during the break and it
seemed to cure the majority of his
handling dilemmas. "I was still afraid
to pass people down the hill ," Renfrow
said.
Russ ell was visibl y upset afier the
race: " I just got tired in the end," he
said. " I was closing on 'em in the first
race, but we had to stop and it broke
my concenuation. 1 wasn 't as good as
the rest after that. "
The battle for eighth, meanwhile,
turn ed into war fare. McMurter, Quar terIey and DuHamel battled for the
maj ority of the restarted race with
McMurter clearing away on the last
lap, leaving th e fai ri ng banging to the
other two.
" I didn 't want an ything to do wi th
Dale or DuHamel on th e last lap,"
McMurter said. " I've ridden wit h both
of th em enough to know 1 wanted at
least 50 feet in the last com er."
And he was right. Qu arterley ended
up bash ing fai rings with DuHamel all
the way down th e backsuaight.
" I wanted to own .that position ,"
Quarterl ey said. " At first 1 had my
elbow on him , but he wor ked past that.
H e says we sh ouldn 't be rid ing like
that for 10th place, but I see it as a
few more po ints and 1 also see it as
a factory Suzuki vs. a privateer Honda
first tim e out. I wasn't going to let that
beat me. I would ha ve done the same
thing to Rueben. "
DuHamel was calm, yet angered by
Quart erley's act ions: " He ban ged me
five or six tim es on the backstrai ght,"
the Ca nadian said. " I had a talk with
him after. We don 't want to be doing
that again. That's the first tim e I' ve
seen somebody do that , and I've raced
closely with a lot of people all over
the world. It's not worth it for 10th
place, somebody could have been hurt.
I like racing tight, but let's not turn
racing int o boxing."
Pol en will now head to J apan to
resum e his racing commitmen ts there:
" It was fun . I liked comi ng back. " ~
