Ol d Ascot fans a nd Tf competitors will remember Babe as the mechanic in the Sprague ra cin g fam il y. H is so n, Joh n ny, cam paigned a 1967 Tf650 T r iu mp h Bonn ev ill e a n d a 250cc Bultaco in the late '60s a nd ear ly '70s. Johnny was famous for his feet-up lockto-lock slides and hi s win, break or cra sh a ttit ude. For all wh o kn ew Babe personally, he was the most giving, sharing and caring racer/fan you'd ever meet. Babe a nd johnny were a tough combination to bea t. Babe is su rvived by hi s wife Betty, son J ohnny, daughter Judy, brother Elmer, five g ra ndc h i ld re n , and, o f course, his 1967 Triumph kn own as Nellie Bell. Services were held Ap ril 19 a t Riv • erside Vetera n Cemetery. According to wife Betty, Bab e wouldn' t wa nt a nyo ne to send flowers. Just invite a friend to Ascot while you still can. Godspeed, Babe. I'll see you a t the Big 'TT race in the sky. You will be missed. Tim Mc..\furray Gardena, CA O££ the road Yam aha's April 6 decision to p ull th eir su pport truc ks off the road left me and two o ther field tech ni cians without a job. I wou ld like to say thanks to the many Yamaha dealers and wish the best to a ll o f the riders with whom I worked over th e past three yea rs. Those who wo uld like to con tact me can do so a t 62 11 Pi ckett s Ridge, Acworth, GA 30101. Greg Quador Acworth, GA Sidecar (an I applaud Larry Co lema n 's recent letter abo u t sideca r coverage in Cycle N ews. I'm su re th ere are many motorcyclists like me wh o think GP bikes look a nd sou nd pretty much a like and wh o mi ss th e exci ternent of sidecars at the Nation al roa d races. The teamwork of th e (sidecar) racers is obvio us as they s tru gg le to m ake tho se unstabl e machines behave. The American a nd Canadian sidecar racers put on a great show in spite of their low bu dgets. There are no factory spo nso rs to send p ress releases to the media, so we spectators depend on you to bring us the coverage th at th e exci tme nt level of the sport deserves. Please cover the sidecars - both internationall y and locally. Mak e me want to go to the G Ps aga in. George Fisher Arbor, MI A~n We have covered and will continue 10 COVeT G P sidecar racing. As for couering sidecars " locally, " as far as we know, there is no sidecar road racing being conducted in th is cou ntry other than at the U.S. GP . . . Edit or. Spot on It is not often that I take the time or effort to wr ite a letter, particul arl y one of praise. However, the Edi tor's Megaphone by Pau l Carruthers which appeared in the April 25 issue, has stirred me to action . Congratulati ons for having the cour age to question the sta tements of a form er World Ch am p ion (Ba rr y Sheene). Most reporters in our indusrry are convi nced that o nce a person has shown sufficient a bili ty to ride a motorcycle at the high est levels, this a utoma tica lly mea ns tha t person also possesses superior intell ect a nd judgemen t. T he fact that Barry Sheene was a great racer does not imp ly that he has the abi li ty to tie his ow n shoes, nor does it imply that he sho uld be restr icted to loafers. It on ly mean s th at he has a grea t tal ent in that particu lar area and makes me jealous as hell that I was given another menu of talents. While Sh een e cri ticized th e wh ite lines marking th e edge o f th e track as a problem at Laguna Seca , he failed to mention that all GP courses are supposed to hav e th ose lines. The FIM rul e book, titled FIM Standards for Motorcycle Road Racing Courses, clearl y states the following: Page 17, Art icle 029.92 Marking The edges o f the track must be clearly demarcated by a co nt in uo us lin e of white anti -skid paint havin g a width of between 10 a nd 20 ems .
