Dust-free co ndi tions kept th e raci ng close th rough out th e fir st loop a nd th e top two co ntende rs were o n ly six seconds apart as they da sh ed into the pits. H amel' s 250cc KTM led th e way into th e pits, but a q uick refu el p ut 500cc tea mmat e Smi th in fro nt , as th e du o head ed into loop two. Ziuerk o pf dash ed into th e p its in th ird after co ll iding with Smith a nd losing th e lead j us t before p it row, a nd a steady pace had m oved Roeseler u p to fou rt h. H un n icu tt was two m in utes behi nd th e leaders in fifth , with Os tbo lead ing th e Vet contenders in sixt h a nd Kell v Sorenson, ATK's Chris Crandall , Ed Sorenson a nd Pa ul Kra use ro u nding out the top 10: Spee ds d ro p p ed as th e 34 -m i le seco nd loop began. O ut in fro nt of the pack, Hamel was sufferi ng in th e tree sect ions in th e loo p. " I hit a tree and nearl y kn ock ed myse lf ou t," H a mel. It was just survival after that. " . Hamel's crash p ut Smith in the n u mb er-o ne spot but Roeseler was right on his tail and the two- wa y bailie for the lead com menced. The trai l headed int o the mo unta ins and one section o f the co urse was co vered by snow near the 7000 foo t mar k. "We had a grea t ti me," said Roeseier. " We passed back a nd forth , back a nd fort h - th at's th e way racing sho uld be." T he seco nd loop too k th e lead ers o ne a nd a q uart er hours 10 comp lete bu t o n ly 25 seco nds separated Roeseler and Smith as th ey headed into pit row . Roeseler stopped for fuel but Smith rode straigh t th rough a nd led th e way into the final 27-mi le loop. Ziuer kopf race d through the pi ts th ree minutes back in third, with Hamel and Hunnicu tt o ne mi nute back in a neck-in neck bailie for fo urth. Ostbo raced th ro ugh in sixth overa ll, still goi ng stro ng a t the head of the Vet class despite se ve re stoma ch problems. . Co lorado's Fritz Kadl ec used th e trees 10 his advantage and moved u p four p lace s to seventh overall and ATK 's Paul Kra use raced into pit row in eigh th , as th e weather gave way to a hea vy shower of rain which q uickly turned to hai l. Cranda ll and Sorenson were the nex t racers through , and Jim m y Lew is was ou t in fro nt of the 125cc class in 12th o vera ll, w ith Roger Hurd and John Braasch fightin g it ou t for second back in 22n d overal l. " I had a p lan go ing into th e race," said Smith. " I kn ew the co urse was going to be pretty tech ni ca l a nd virgin, so I wa nted 10 stay in the top three . or four in the first two loops a nd th en pi n it o n the last loo p. Bu t Larry had the same p la n. We mo to red together a ll th e way . We were passing eac h o ther all the time - he'd overs hoot a corner and I' d get ahead, the n I'd overshoot o ne a nd he'd go by me." The leaders were sri II side by side whe n the cou rse turned for ho me and 100 mi les of raci ng came down 10 a fina l two -mile spri nt . "I passed Dan towards the end ," said Roeseler, " We were ca tch ing some good air on the last road co m ing in 10 th e fin ish a nd he was rig ht beh ind m e." " It was anybo dy's race right u p to the end ," said Sm ith. "We were maybe two miles from the finish and I hit a tree and bo unced off th e trail. I had to cli mb up a li ttl e led ge to get back o n the road and that was all it too k." Roeseler kept the th ro ttle p in ned all th e way and powered ac ro ss th e fin ish to tak e th e win 20 seco nds a head of hi s race -long riva l. Smith's seco nd p lace finish earned Open class honors. T hird overa ll went to KX500 pi lot Ted Hunnicutt, who is now only five points beh ind Smith in the standings. Ziuerkopf brought hi s O pen class ATK home in fo uth o vera ll, despite gelling lost in the last loop , wh ile Hame l hung on to ta ke fifth a nd Kadl ec sixth. Pa ul O stbo co nti n ued hi s race- lo ng domination of the Vet division a nd to ok th e O ver 30 honors in seventh overall , just seco nds a head o f AT K hotsh o ts Cranda ll and Kra use. Seco nd in the Vet division went to Grant Pal enske in 14th overa ll a nd Parry finished five places back in third.
