Brent Werner closed the 1989-90 Sports ma n Speedway Association seaso n with an exci ting win in -the Expert cla ss at Inl an d Mo tor Spee dway , . T he actio n was sizzling early in th e Exper t ma in. j erry Black, Ch ris Manchester and Werner staged a furious, three-abreast battle for the lead, O n a dry , slick track, Ma nch ester a mazed everyo ne wit h a ha rd charge in the dusty cush io n. For a lap a nd a ha lf he stayed in the loo se stu ff wh ile ba tt ling for first but in tur n three on the seco nd lap , the cushio n bi t back. The Hesperia, Ca lifornia, high school stud ent did a " 180" and threw it away, forcing severa l riders to lay it down. T he referee threw a red flag and kicked Man ch ester out for causing th e sto ppage. On the restart. Black 'rode 10 th e fro nt on ce ag a in, while Werner occupied second wit h C hri s Casr in third. O n la p tw o , Casti n relega ted Wern er to third and went hunting for the leader . Like Manchester ear lier . Cast in went to the cus hio n and seco nd po ised to take over th e lead. Also like Man chester , the cushio n a ttac ked him a nd he nearl y tagged the wa ll. The second-yea r racer saved it , but he d ro pped all th e way to fifth befor e droppi ng o ul. After Cas tin dropped o u t, Werner decided to have ano the r !;O at Black. He p u lled u p to the rear ti re of Blac k's Darrel l Correy-tuned \Veslake o n lap five. As they ex iled turn four and head ed for the white flag, Black left som e room o n the inside and two-time Junior Na tio na l Champion Werner sped through t.he apace. He led the fin a l lap and was th e fir st to arri ve a t Don Robinson's checkered flag . Black fin ished seco nd follo wed by j o n Boyer and Archi e Perez. .
