Before the end of lap one, Carbonell, Cra ft a nd Fuller began to pu ll a way as they wa ged their ba ttl e Ior the lead. O wen went dow n ha rd o n th e first la p and had to retire from th e mo te. Lap two saw Suzuki -mo u n ted Sco tty Hub ba rd mov in g throu gh the pack, gelli ng by Whiteh ead int o fifth place. Meanwhile. Carbonell and Craft were ba ngi n g bar s in eac h co rne r wit h Fu ll er la ying back wa iti n g for the leader s to mak e a mi sta ke. H u bb a rd was o n the spot. having go tte n by Du p la n tis earl ier in the lap , and went by the dow ned Full er. Carbonell was back up a nd ma naged to keep second p lace, but his mistake allowed Hubba rd to close to wit h i n stri ki ng dista n ce. Hubbard began to press Carb on ell and was able to get past in the back section of the track. Craft had stretched a JO·second lead by lap fou r. a nd H ubbar d wa s a b le to p u t so me breat hin g room between hi msel£ a nd th ird p laced Carbonell. Full er mad e a lat e-race cha rge and took third from a tired Car bonell. At the checkered n ag the order read Craft, Hu bbard , Fu ll er , Carbo ne ll a nd Dav id H usband. Ca rbonell timed th e sta rt of th e seco n d mota perfectly. and was followed out of the lefthand fir st turn by Husband a nd Craft. H usband qu ickly crashed h imself into last p lace. leaving Carbonell and Craft to figh t [or the lead. Craft fo llowed Carbo nell for the first la p, chec king ou t his lin es. a nd on la p two Cra ft made his move. Craft too k a different line going in to a tall left-hand berm . and was able to CU I in side of Carbonell to take the lead. Craft never looked back, building hi s lead to 10 seconds by the end of the rnoto. Car bonell a nd H ubbard fought for second pl ace for two lap s unti l Hubbard fell in th e mu ddy back sectio n o f th e track . givin g Ca rbo nell so me breathing room.
